Nov 3 - Stave River
« on: November 03, 2004, 04:30:21 PM »

Had fantastic day casting the old hammered croc and drifting yarn for chum and hopefully a coho.  The former prevailed but I did hook some nice fresh ones.  Lots of questionable techniques going on and I was just wishing that DFO would show up.  Lo and behold, two fisheries officers walked in behind me and confiscated gear and escorted two young fellows off the beach up to the parking lot at the Hydro site.  No licence for one and no salmon stamp for the other so I overheard.

Helicopter overheard early afternoon most likely doing chum counts and the Inch Creek hatchery did another seine pulling out wild female coho from the area around the boat ramp.  Some red tomatoes came up in the net as well as a greyish spring.

I've only fished the Stave twice now and its a great river, going to look for some new spots soon and find a quieter area to fish other than the park area.  Water was a touch higher than last week but clarity was excellent.

Speaking of helicopters, I keep seeing an orange one on the vedder do low and slow fly bys over the river. Very Annoying. Who is that?

Cheer Nicefish, I saw people on the otherside enjoying the peace and quiet while I was there.  Are there any scrambledowns or trails to the riverbank as I noticed there are a couple of residences there.   Looked like a nice place to try the fly.

Second question - Can anybody give a rough estimate of the pink run size and timing that goes up the Stave (if any)?  Wouldn't mind trying that next season as pinks always put up great sport.

Thanks,

GHC

GoldHammeredCroc - What size/weight of spoon do you use on the stave?
I have a 3/4 oz but I think that might be a little heavy.

Thanks

Just the 3/8 oz Croc is my personal favourite.  I found anything with orange on it really gets an aggressive bite.  Also fishing close to the surface reduces the number of snagged fish, although the odd one does happen.

Best of luck
