Capilano Nov. 11
« on: November 11, 2004, 04:43:14 PM »

Perfect conditions with good visibility. Still a few fish lurking around but not in the same quantity as a week ago. Snaggers still out in force. Saw two disturbing things this afternoon:

Saw a man with a very young son (approx. 6) fishing on a very mossy incline. The man was so engrossed on his fishing that he forgot about his son. The son had wandered off and was standing on a very slippery ledge. One errant step and he would have fallen into the river.

The second disturbing thing I saw were hyperdermic needles and crack pipes where I was fishing. It's bad enough having to put up with snaggers but I have to put up with crackheads. >:(

This is a pet peeve of mine...people who take children too small to fish with them and then expect them to just sit and wait while "Dad" is busy fishing for hours.

Yikes... Scary just reading about it.... :-\ Often too many don't realize the dangers of those angled ledges.... :-\ once we watched two fellas on the east side of Dog Leg, coming down with a inflatable boat... (very cheaply made...) and ONE paddle. One guy threw the boat in the water, jumped in. Guess what, the boat began to deflate.... He paddled frantically back to shore as his buddy tried to grab onto his hand. Funny now when picturing it, but sure was a tense moment when he started to drift a bit. :-\

When fishing with a beginner, your attention should totally be on the beginner, especially it is a kid! When we take newbies or kids out, our eyes rarely look away from them. It makes things easier for yourself too, so you don't have to end up untangling major birdnests or paying for broken rods etc.....

As for the needles etc... I now firmly believe that to solve the environmental, fishery problems, one has to tackle the social problems first.

Hey FA. I remember about 4 years ago I was fishing the Cap at Dog Leg across from the cliff and the water was just raging. What do I see? I see a group of about 9 or 10 kids aged between 8 & 10 years young moving down the trail, if you can call it that, with only one adult. Turns out they were going to collect water samples for class and put them in little baggies. The supervising adult led them down to the water where they proceeded to fill thier baggies. I was just freaking because I knew if one of them had slipped in, they were gone. Not a single thing
I would of been able to do. The water was moving so fast, I will never ever forget that. 9 children, 1 adult, November, water high and very cold. Scarey! Thank God no accidents occurred that day or maybe I would'nt be typing this.

People don't realize how wet and slippery it is, particularly this time of year.

The Cap is a dangerous little river because most of the time during the low season, it was so shallow and easy that most people forget about its danger during rising or flooding water.  When I took a river fishing course as a newbie way back, the instructor talked about a lot of local rivers and their nice spots except the Cap.  When asked why, he shook his head in sadness and told of his best fishing buddy drowned in the Cap.  So, one year July 1st, the Cap was in flood.  The Cable pool was loaded with anglers on slippery and sloping rock.  One look at the water there, I told my fishing partner that we should be fishing at lower river for safety sake.  We still limited out.  Unfortunately for one new fisherman, that day was his last as he slipped into the raging water from the Cable Pool while trying to land a fish.  Never risk that much for a mere fish.  There is always another day.  Be careful new fishers.

A few days after the flood, I was talking to another fisherman while fishing around the House Rock area.  He literally saw the unfortunate newbie fisherman slipping from the rock.  He told me he could never forget that last panic look on the slipping fisherman as he fell and felt so helpless about saving him.  That is why I advise all newbies fishing with me to stay at least one body length from the edge of fast or raging water, and never fish on slippery or unstable rocks.

I fish the cap fairly frequently, and just a couple of weeks ago, I almost fell in.

I am super careful, and pretty surefooted, but I just misjudged the slipperyness of this one ledge at 3rocks pool. I stepped down onto level rock but it was like wet ice. I dropped to my hands and knees and slid a few more inches towards the edge. I very carefully got up and inched back to saftey.

Where I would have gone in wasn't fast but deep and cold. Smartened me up quick.

its sad hearing about all the preventible mishaps...though i admit, i'm no exception.  especially growing up fishing the chuck, i've had my own close calls.  its just too bad that by nature, it takes a 'jolt' to smarten us up, rather than using common sense and basic precautions.  sometimes the excitement of the moment clouds our sense of awareness.

....BUT..... there's no excuse for lack of adult supervision when children are brought to the river.  i once told a man that his children (all under the age of 9) were playing too close to the water's edge....he looked at me and told me in sort of a coy and annoyed fashion, that his children were all wearing pfd's..... this was true, but i reminded him that if his kids were to be swept away, their pfd's would be useless against the rapids and boulders which would crush them like eggs....he just ignored me and continued to fish.....what a prick. >:(
