Flyrod opinions from the experts...
« on: November 15, 2004, 09:37:59 AM »

That's all of you (at least in comparison to me)... ::)

I'm fairly new to fly casting and am looking at picking up a fly rod for river salmon fishing (Fraser Valley).
Your opinions are requested:
1)what weight rod is best (I've been looking at 8 or 9 wts.)
2) Fenwick HMG or HMX or TFO Series 1?

Thanks in advance.

8 wt. Think a 9 wt is an overkill unless you are specifically targeting chinooks.

9wt for big fresh Chum & Spring. 7wt for Steelhead & large Coho. 6wt for Pink, most Coho, and larger trout. As for rods that is a personal thing everyone has their own likes and dislikes. I like Marodo (durable with good backbone for a modrate price) but that's me. I suggest a rod with a medium action with good backbone; just make sure it feels right in your hand. Remember it is your rod no-one elses.

Newsman,
If I had to choose one to begin with, sounds like an 8 wt? Right up the middle....?

I use a 7/8 wt rod which works well for most salmon species other than the smaller trout which I use my 5/6 wt rod.
