Be Gentle with me....
« on: February 15, 2005, 03:50:00 PM »

I've slipped over into the dark side....

I am now the proud owner of a 9' 5wt dragonfly rod, with the Dragonfly Kamloops reel.  It's all spooled up with backing, fly line, and leader.

Now....

I need to figure out how to cast this thing before a trip in early June, lest I look like an idiot due to my casting skills (rather than just looks :D)

I'll likely be doing this on the cheap, so directions to websites, videos etc would be appreciated.  I don't suppose I can bittorrent down any instructional videos ;)

I'm excited, and a bit overwhelmed.

What type of line ? I found a floating line easier to learn with.

If you've got a backyard with some room, you can try casting there--just substitute a piece of yarn at the end of your tippet (leader) instead of a real fly.  Once you feel comfortable enough to cast in front of people, I've seen folks practicing their casting at one of the ponds in Central Park.

DS, I've got a couple of videos you could borrow that would be extremely helpful.  They're by Tom White.  I'm in the Langley/Surrey area.  I'll be at the fly fishing show in Cloverdale too.  PM me if you're interested.

Hey DS, try heading to the fly fishing show, I was there last year (met Marco there). There's a lot of different guys that can give you the gist of things, and really know their stuff. It's pretty sweet, ended up test-casting $1000 rods, felt pretty sweet.

Good event too, lots of cool stuff to see and watch and learn.

I'll either be there friday evening, or saturday all day, apparently I look like some guy named "drew," so come by and say hi. Will be wearing my black/brown QCL hat, with the kingfisher (bird) on the front.

DS,

You can fasttrack the learning curve by setting up a video camera and taping yourself casting. Watch and compare your positioning with intructional video or pictures. Best if you can have an experienced flyflicker do some comentary when you're taping so that you get to feel and see at key positions.

Spend $50.00 and get a private lesson from Scott from Anglers West. It will speed up your learning curve

Cloverdale Agriplex, this weekend.  http://www.flyfishingevents.com/ffevancouver.htm

I've never been to one before but it looks like fun.  (window shopping)  ;D
