Vedder Feb 12th
« on: February 12, 2005, 04:02:30 PM »

3rd trip of the year to the Vedder this season. Seem to visit the same stretch of river each time and each time it's changed somewhat. First trip I didn't land anything though.

I think I bumped into Chris G out there...not sure though. I did get to see something rare...I witness my first steelhead double header. Both guys landed 12 - 15lb hatchery females. Beautiful fish...took a photo for one of them.

A total of 4 fish taken that I saw in the area I was in.

Off to fish the Oyster and Quatse on the Island next weekend. Hopefully I'll have some shots.

Finally...is it just me or is the etiquette out there getting worse? I had two different guys throw in no more than 15ft below me this morning  ???  What happened to starting at the top of the run and working down?

You can probably identify Chris by his Make Belief cap. I once sat next to Chris at the Pointa Vista restaurant but was too embarrassed to introduce myself. Didn't want to be seen in public talking to a Make Belief fan. ;D

Some guys are pretty good and ask if they can go above you, but a lot of fishers are also not moving spots, so you Kinda just slot in wherever, if you want to fish that particular run.
I fished Lickman the other morn and there were three anglers including me on the run we all fished down the run then went back to the top and down again, just the way it should be.
I fished it again yesterday and most of the anglers were not moving, so I went around them and moved  on.

My first Steelhead trip for the season today.  Life has become too busy :(

The alarm went off at 0530.  I dragged myself out of bed, and noted how nice it was that it wasn't raining.  I got all my gear together, piled it in the truck, and noticed a few small raindrops.  Well, they DID say it was going to rain  ::)  Got moving around 0550.  Rain was picking up, and I was thinking "I hope it won't rain too hard."  Just then my mind flashed to the image of my rainjacket hanging nicely on the hook by the door.  "Drat!"  That's OK, I haven't hit the highway yet.  Turn around, drive back, and grab my jacket.  ACTUALLY get going at 0610.  The drive out was wet.  It rained almost the whole time.  When I got to the Whatcom Rd. Tim's I noticed gas was 85.9 Grrrr.... That's what it was back in town!  I had to put in $20.  Otherwise I would be spending the day waiting for a tow truck, instead of fishing.   Got up to my area around Wilson road, at about 0715, and got suited up in the light rain.  I flogged the water hard, methodically, and with blades, (copper/brass/nickel), worms and jensen egg.  I now have probably the world's cleanest tackle collection  ::)  While fishing, it was nice to hear the American dippers calling out.  I think this was the first time I've heard them.  They must be getting in the Valentine's mood ;)  A few loons, and other assorted ducks winged down along the river like precision jet fighters flying tight patterns on a a river run.  Always fun to watch.  The rain turned on, and off, and on, and on....It pretty much rained constantly with a few small breaks.   And to top it off, one section of the river had 3 wild Steelies to the beach.    Since the clarity seemed to be declining, I went down to Lickman at around 1330, and tried a bit of water, but my heart wasn't in it, since apparently neither were my fingers which were going numb from the cold rain on them.  1400 saw me back at the truck, and preparing to head home.  I can still say that unlike CG, every steelhead that I have hooked, I have landed.  I continue to be a perfect 1/1 :(  It was a soggy time, but good.

To top it off, gas at Whatcom Rd, on the return was only 75.9, so I filled up.  Then I passed through Mission where gas was only 64.0 (no 3.5 discount) :o Go figure.  So, it wasn't as good a day as I hoped, but I did save some money on gas.  Perhaps my wife will let me out again soon(?)

Chris, I'm going to have to offer you lunch so that I can be near you and maybe some of your Steelhead presence will rub off on me :D

Cheers,
The ANTI-Fish.

 Good report DS.

FA not wearing The Hat at the present time as content with the TML Drennan Float along with the ML bait rag which is a good combination this past week with 3 wilds for the brood capture program. 2:40 of course had his TML hat on when he hooked the 7 on Wednesday landing 2, that should tell you something. ;D ;D

I did not fish today but started my early morning weekend river patrosl looking for someone dumping garbage. Did not see anyone but one day I will.

I am sorry to report some recent dump sites since we did our cleanup only 2 weeks ago. I picked up about 25 flattened cardboard boxes just around the Train Bridge. I also talked to Terry about the garbage dumped at Lickman Road parking lot, terrible that people continue to do that. I will pick it up tomorrow sometime. >:(

One day we will catch someone and hope we can get them to court and make an example of them. As it is election time we need to get a comittement from our Provincial Government to tighten the dumping laws and get more resources to do so. If you go to an all candidate meetings over the next 2 months question those running for Provincial office what they plan to do about this disgrace. We call this Beautiful British Columbia but it certainally is not, we should be ashamed of ourselves for allowing this to happen. As more people move to the Valley more people that do not care about our environment will be coming with this increase in population growth. It is called progress they say. ::)

I then headed out to Peg Leg, Jesperson and Gill Road areas on the Fraser River and noted the same out there, what is our province coming to. I really paid attention and garbage on my drive and garbage is everywhere along our Highways. I noticed the Park and Ride at Lickman Road opposite Tim Hortons and it is equally a mess.

The plus side of the day beside the debris I piccked up I got close to $20 in bottles, helps with the gas that by the way Dragon Speed was 66.5 in Chilliwack this evening. ;D

So not to hyjack this thread completly will give a bit of a fishing report. On the way down to the Train Bridge  saw a steelhead lost and one had just seen one taken. Met Chad on the river and gave him some of my remaining bugs so hope that may have found him a fish.

Lots of anglers throughout the system and the river stayed in all day I believe and When I looked at it at 5:45 it was perfect.

With a lot of big fish around this past week a good time for those that can only fish on the weekend to get out and enjoy..

Very nice report DS. It's amazing how we can forget little things like rain coats when we leave for the river. I did the same thing on Wed. and decided not to make a return trip back home for it. Lucky for me it turned out to be a nice day.

Again, nice fish Steeler 2000. Didn't look at it too long as I probably would have turned green with envy. After you guys took off, a guy up and accross bonked one as well. A lot of action within 1/2 hr.
