Too rough for me off Sandheads July 24th
« on: July 24, 2005, 01:04:37 PM »

I headed out from Steveston to Sandheads today around 10am hoping to fish. Way too rough with 15 to 20 knot WNW wind. Turned around and cruised in to check out Canoe passage from the East to look for fish coming up the river. Saw one guy get a nice big Sock on gillnets in the river off the East tip of Westham Island. Heading back to Steveston going down the river, the waves were really building with the outflow tide. Never a dull moment with that kind of wind. The big waves sure freed up a lot of drift wood in the river today.

Hey! I concur that report. Heard a report of someone hooking a farmed Atlantic off Defense Islands today. Heard of a couple of other springs up there too. My buddy was at the docks at Horseshoe Bay when the guy brought his fish in. LOL!

Has anyone heard about how HOWE SOUND is doing? I mean, Sewell's and the crew that fish up that way NEVER issue any reports about what is going on up there and it could be a big secret!

Haven't heard anything about Howe Sound, but I just talked to a guy who had success at the Bell Buoy on Saturday around high slack. He said the bite turned on for about 20 minutes, and in that time, he and his buddy got two Pinks, one Coho, and one Spring.

Back to the weather at T14, you were right about it being important to have the right gear for that zone FM. When I  got back to the ramp Sunday, I decided to run my old dog of a kicker for a bit, but couldn't get it started. I only gave it about 40 pulls, but the point is, that  if my main had died out there, it was the kind of waves that might sink a 16' drifter.

Yup, good call on that one!  :D

Basically, if you get into some real trouble out there, the only people there are to save your bacon are another passing pleasure craft or a tug, and there are a lot of people that run down there without a soundly maintained boat. Good call on firing up your kicker, as many people let it hang off the back of their boat for weeks at a time, maybe even a whole season...without even starting it or giving it any kinda of meaningful running time!  LOL! :) At any rate, if we do get some serious sockeye fishing opportunities and there are some schooling around in the next 3 to 4 weeks, if your boat has one battery, take a set of jumper cables and a small tool box, as one day, you'll run into someone out there that will need 'em! I run two batteries on my boat, and alternate the batteries each time out to keep em charged---one battery on the way out, and the other for the run back in, and then isolate them when I am out there, so that if one dies, or I have a problem, I have no problem getting fired and running back to some kind of safety. ALSO, another bit of advice is to run full fuel when you leave for a run to Sandheads, no matter where you are coming from, as you never know what may happen out there, especially on a longer run. run the law of thirds, 1/3 fuel out, 1/3 fuel return, and 1/3 for tootling around out there. I can remember running down there one day, fishing with my kicker for half the trolling time, and returning to the dock to put in 85 litres in a 120 litre tank.

Having been involved in 2 search and recoveries (unfortunately) it takes something like that to really put just how ignorant some people are. I even plan for others...even on a trip out like that, I have a day tank of fuel that I can lend people, and some good half inch lines to tow if need be.

Tight lines to all, and I will be wetting lines again this FRIDAY! :)

hehe

Safety first guys, and if we do get a sockeye/pink opening off Sandheads, I guarantee you, at least a few will have a close call or unfortunate incident.

Safety first guys! :)
