Jumbo chub, Lower Fraser River August 2nd
« on: August 02, 2005, 05:27:49 PM »

Get 'em while you can, why wait for the sockeyes? ;D

Fishing for peamouth chub etc has picked up since last week. We had a pretty successful day today, with about 25 fish caught. Four species were encountered today, they include peamouth chub, northern pikeminnow, sculpin and shiner perch.

We fished during the incoming tide. Water was clearer too, which made a difference. The bites were on pretty much the whole time. Float fished with a small piece of dough a few feet under a Drennan worked well. :)

The birds were also very lively today. A couple of great blue herons were trying to scare away the geese. The duck families swam across the river a couple of times. Some sparrows were hanging around us the whole time because they wanted to eat dough. ;D There was also an eagle gliding high above us near the beginning.

If you decide to change the pace a bit and fish for these little guys. Some things to remember:

  • Incoming tide is best, keep your gear small. 4lb test line with a size 14 to 16 hook is sufficient enough.
  • When fishing the tidal Fraser River, Daily quota for fish that are not listed in the tidal regulation booklet is 20. Peamouth chub, northern pikeminnow have a daily quota of 20 if you decide to keep them. Shiner perch falls in the perch family, so daily quota for them is 8.
  • Only one rod can be used in tidal Fraser River, but you may use a rig that can catch up to two fish at once.
  • Barbless, single point hook only.

Enjoy this week's good weather. :)

Don't spill out the secret spot now FA. ;)

It is London's Landing Pier. We caught a few more dozens today. :) Photos later.

The floats were being pulled down constantly today. ;D The bites were plentiful. Different types of fish came in waves actually. Non-stop action of shiner perch and peamouth chub mainly. We also saw some gigantic bullhead caught. :o

Highlights... :)

:o

Fishing was slower at the beginning today, most likely due to the low tide. Shiner perch were active throughout the day, but very sneaky. The peamouth chub fishing picked up around 2pm, when the tide started to come in. :)
