Cates park Aug 13
« on: August 14, 2005, 03:45:53 PM »

We took the boat out from Cates Saturday afternoon for some crabs and whatever else, decided to bring my new flyrod in case of any pinks. Set the crab traps and noticed some fish jumping right away in the mudflats, quickly motored over to the spot where they were jumping, about 5 feet of water, and we see fish jumping all around us, I turn to panic mode as I quickly try to ready the flyrod, by the time Im all set up the school is long gone. But it was pretty exciting for a few minutes just seeing that many jump around the boat. Checked the traps, no keepers so we decided to do a bit of mooching with buzz bombs in around 80 feet of water. Right away I hook a smaller type fish, once we get the fish is to the surface I can see it is a pretty large bullhead, but once lifted out of the water my gf jumps and Im kinda shocked because the fairly large bullhead is bitten clean in half just behind the gillplates, nothing but a big head on a hook :o, strange thing was I didnt feel any large tugs when reeling up because I was kinda horsing around not really paying attention. Didnt do too well crabbing the rest of the day, and we didnt see anymore pinks show themselves but it was still a great day to be on the water.

Ya what could have bitten the bullhead?
I was fishing at Ambleside and the bait fish was biten in half. And doggie has no teeth so can't be doggies.

Could it have been seal?

dogfish actually have razor sharp teeth almost like a ceraded knife, because it was such a clean cut  I think it was a dogfish, but it could of been a big ling.

Bwibwi stick your finger in a dogfishs mouth then say it has no teeth because you will probaly have no finger. They have very sharp teeth and i can almost guarentee thats what bite the bullhead. Last week i had a 5ft+ dogfish inhale half of my 6lb lingcod it was cool.

flounder seemed a bit slow, although I find it best on a low tide or an incoming tide, dont have the best luck for them on a high tide
