Haven't posted for a while but here goes...
The family was up at Harrisson this week, so after work Friday I headed up. Decided to hit the river for a few hours first
. Walked in across the railroad tracks to the river above the Aggasiz bridge. Walked past some BBers and chatted a bit with a DFO fish counter. Seems that a few had been caught (4 springs among 15 or so guys). Decided to wak on and try bar fishing at a spot I had to myself. After an hour or so the rod goes off and I landed a nice bright spring in the 15-20 pound range. Thats the good. On the way out someone reported seeing a large bear that made the walk out a bit tense with the fish, but I didn't see it.
After a day at Harrisson the wife says why don't you fish Sunday and try to get another one. Well she didn't have to tell me twice. So I went back to the same spot. When I arrived the trail across the tracks was blocked by some security person who said that a train had been broken into so nobody was permitted to cross the tracks. I was told it was a railway security giard, but later heard it was RCMP. He was taking names and addresses of every fishermen who walked out. Many fisherman waited around, some left. I managed to find "another trail
" a few hundred yards away. Apparnetly the office left several hours later. I seriously doubt a fisherman did anythign to that train. Thats the bad.
Well fishing was slow. I bar fished for while, then Bbounced with no luck though some where caught. When I walked out to the trail I found a big pile of sockeye carcasess. It was the heads and leftover from the fillets. Someone must have dumped it that afternoon as it was not there in the morning. Maybe a 100 fish or so. I started cleaningn up and filled my two garbage bags. Another guy had three more bags and we managed to clean it up. The other guy had a pickup and was willing to drop it off further down the road away from the trail.
What were they thinking dropping that messs there. Its not hard to guess who might have done this. I can imaging the chances of running into a bear late or early in the day. Very dangerous.
Thats the ugly part.
I thought I'd post a warning as these sort of things are scary - someone could get hurt. Be especially carefull on trails early or late on the day. If people are trying so hard to scare away fishermen that they resort to dumping fish carcasses on the trail, well you have to wonder...
