Beach bummin' for cutthroat
« on: August 29, 2005, 10:30:44 PM »

Another very delightful and productive evening on the beach last week. The conditions were the best of the season; few weeds, calm, clear water, and a lovely sunset. The past couple of outings haven’t been that productive and I was beginning to wonder if the fish had already departed their summer hunting grounds and were preparing to stage off the river mouths.

The evening started off slow but after moving back and forth along the beach I ended up hooking a surprising 5 fish in 1 ¼ hours, but alas my landings totaled 0; I couldn’t keep these suckers on the hook. These fish were larger and jumped aplenty. Many times they’d jump in one direction and, as if in in slo mo, I’d watch my lure go looping off in the other. My hook was sharp, and I’d have them on for a good tussle, but then…

Couple of fish made an impression. Mid way through the evening, I had small strike. Just after I could feel the action of the spoon deaden as it picked up a weed. As the lure came in sight, draped in a weed, there was the very curious cutthroat still following it.

Towards the end of the evening I was standing in hip deep water and looking off to my right when I heard a slight splash in front of me. I quickly looked forward and there was a big cutthroat not a rod length away (7-8ft) leaping vertically out of the water at chin level. Scared the crap out of me suddenly seeing one that close, that high. I made several short casts for him with no luck. A few minutes later, after retrieving a longer cast, a big fish hit in close in, bent the rod over, boiled the water, and was gone. Same fish…?

I'm guessing that for an answer, you'll get: "One on the ocean" ;)

He's kept his little cutthroat secret well in the past. ;D
