Ambleside, Sunday OCT 2.
« on: October 02, 2005, 03:34:47 PM »

hi guys.

just off the phone and not too much going on lately. Seems the rain spell we had last week CANNONED all the "biters" up the Cap River.

I talked to my friend who runs a charter operation and the boats this morning didn't do so hot.

Saw one guy with a CHUM that was CHROME..it was about 9 lbs...he came to shore about 11 am at Vanier Park.

When the Chum start to show...it's basically ALL OVER..and getting to the END of the END....

I also hung out on the shore of Ambleside watching a few guys cast off the groynes this morning with a BIG FAT EXTRA HOT MOCHA in hand after an Eggs Benny Breakfast...and they didn't have anything to report...

However, I did see 1 large Coho jump, a BIG BLACK Spring jump, and a LARGE spring surface.

The tide was ebbing, so it is hard to say what exactly is going on out there, but...on the other hand all the boats had moved and were fishing further west than usual on the EBB...many were almost at the QB which is open water relative to the "inshore" fishing along Ambleside.

If anything, it's cold out there folks, I had double fleece..a jacket and vest...to keep me warm.

Now it's pouring rain this afternoon...wowsers...this will call all the fish into the rivers...

Were the rollers you saw within casting distance from the groynes?

depends on what you mean by "almost all" the boats were into fish.

90% of the anglers that fish that area get NOTHING.
Of the 10% that do catch fish, a good 5% of those may get lucky to get into multiple fish and land them. Of the remaining 5 % of people that catch fish, they are the ones that know what they are doing---and catch fish after fish with repeatability on successive trips--which happens to be a rarity..and I put my time in to learn the Cap Fishery to get to the TOP  5 percent that fish that area.

I watched yesterday for about an hour from Prospect Pt and I saw a couple of guys hook Cohoes..but that was about it.

Noticed I said "Anglers" not boats.

If we were talking boats.the number of boats varies from day to day...but the percentage remains the same.

Hey..how does one get a picture posted...I wanted a picture of last Sunday's trip up..but it never did get posted..I emailed Rodney..????

Oh?

It's just that easy? well then EXPLAIN how 90 percent of the boats get nothing.

Not just that easy my friend..but you're onto something....... I can tell you that..for this year anyways...

By the way, if you take some people from the top 5 %, they'll outfish 90% of the top 5 %.

In exactly the same email as I stated to Rodney....

1. I didn't have the permission of the other 2 guys in the pics to post it on the net so I protected and respected their privacy

2. I work for a local charter operator, and I prefer not to be recognized out there as "Fishin Magician" as I know what it is like to be followed around while fishing for myself, or with my friends or even while I am guiding--it makes a difference about whether or not I can successfully fish an area or concentrate hard without some guy tailing me or restricting my manoevre room in a limited space..not that I mind..but I am quite accepting of fishing the Cap with 25 or 60 boats...come on over and join the party..just not being tailed.

3. While I offer up useful information on the water to fellow anglers and other boats, I don't see a reason to be a "coach" to people who put in neither the effort nor desire to be successful fishing out there when I am out there for the sheer enjoyment and sport of it.  I have invested my time and passion into a sport that I love--and it is just that which keeps me fishing.

4. I know what it is like to be "tailed" out there fishing and it is NOT fun. I remember one day being 6 miles off the slash out in the yonder---or something like a good 15 minute run off Cape Rodger Curtis and having 2 boats turn every which way following me while I was trying to locate the mass of bait I was hooking fish in.

At any rate, when I get my Grady White Marlin 30 footer, with twin 275 Mercury Verados, it won't matter, I'll make sure I am fishing away from most people--finding the prime spots where there are few people.

5. The picture just goes to show the type of results that are typical of a morning or afternoon fishing the area correctly---that's all there is to it.

6. I'll be fishing next weekend--looking for some big Cohos and maybe a Chromer Spring or two for the BBQ..and if you want to know where I may be fishing---I'll probably be at Ambleside if not the T10....

tight lines everyone, and get out there and have some fun before it's all done.....

Even though this is my first season fishing in that local, I totally understand what you are saying about the crowd. Everytime I/we get a fish in that neighbourhood, you have numerous boats on top of you. As in last Saturday, we were fishing away from the parade, shortly after having our one and only on, we were surrounded and crowded out. The first one this time was a large blue & white guide boat - who did happen to hook up shortly after us. What I've learned from my short time fishing in West Van/Pt Grey...

#1 Don't stand up and play your fish...you will be crowded out
#2 Don't play your fish very long...you will be noticed and crowded out
#3 Don't follow the crowd...most are following someone else, and who's to say they know what they are doing.

I think FM youre onto something when you say you need that new boat...

As long as the fishing is good around here its gonna be crowded so you may as well learn to live with it (as long as you want to fish nearby).  Its frustrating but its easy to avoid....just dont fish there.

just dont' fish there and let everyone else catch all the fish they are driving over and past? lol !

I don't think so..but until I find the new spots where fish hold a distance aways from other fishers..I'll continue to fish that area...like I say..I don't mind the crowd too much..other than the "less sporting" individuals who choose to ignorant of other people having a fish on.

I would have to say that this year was a good year at the Cap believe it or not, I didn't have  1 fish cut off from a rigger...although I know of one fish that may have encountered a rigger about 150 yards out...lol

:)

I can't wait for some winter spring fishing...I am going to try a few things--may have to bundle up pretty good..but I am going to try it!  :)
