I'll throw in my 2 cents.  the Cabelas tourney rod is made by G-Loomis and it's the equivalent to their $250-$300 American dollars.  Cabelas sells it for $59.00.  I own 2 of them and they are sweet. As far as a reel goes, Abu Garcia C4 or Shimano Cardiff or Shimano Calcutta.  You will not go wrong with any of these and most likely won't upgrade any time soon.  You'll just be looking to buy more because you can't have enough of a good thing.

This may sound funny but my buddy snapped his rod while fighting a pink using a salmon rod he got for canadian tire 2 years ago, so make sure you have knowledge on what your buying!

Most rods are fine if you play the fish the right way. I find that as soon as you put your hand near the joint to pull a fish in, it will break 9/10 times.

Did the rod break while he was playing the fish or was it at the point of landing the fish?
