A salmon question...
« on: October 05, 2005, 02:21:20 AM »

Hi all,

I'm wondering if any of you can help me out with a pretty basic question:  Are salmon residents around Vancouver?  What I mean is: are there salmon in places like Indian Arm or English bay all of the time, or are they present on during spawning season?

I've only fished rivers and lakes my whole life so salmon has been strictly seasonal, but I've when I have the opportunity to get on a ocean-going boat should I bother trolling regardless of the season for stick to baited hooks on the bottom for cods, flounders, rockfish and greenling?

The reason I ask is that on the boat I would be the senor angler.  I know how to troll a spoon and could learn how to rig herring/anchovies for trolling, but I don't want to waste my companion's time salmon fishing if there is no point to it.

Advice please, all info welcome.

Thank you.

I have heard of springs caught at the power plant (indian arm), cap mouth,  and atkinson being referred to as residents or feeders.  I would assume there are fish to be caught year round but the residents will be marginal in total numbers compared to when the run is coming in - I don't know if they are worth targetting if you arent really well seasoned at trolling springs.

I remember trolling a lot as a little kid...personally at that age, I much rather have a rod in my hand with some bait or a buzz bomb.  How old is your "companion"?  I guess it really just depends on your expectations.

The short answer is Yes there are resident feeders hereabouts-fishing for Salmon in the salt is 365 days/year.
The best months are April/May and August into October with June probably being the worst.
It's all complicated because of so many fish returning to the Fraser/Squamish/Capilano-they are what people normally target.
Downriggers are essential most of the time unless you want to spend al day jigging.
