Almost there: Stave River November 9th
« on: November 09, 2005, 10:17:54 PM »

Well I'm one step closer to my goal of landing a 50+ Spring on my fly rod. Got a 30 today at the Stave. I got tired of wrestling Chum, too much work to get the clean ones now, so I went hunting Ho's today. Spied what I thought looked like a Coho porpousing at the end of my casting range. Facing it head on I didn't want to move closer and spook it, so I started firing flies from where I was. After trying a number of Coho patterns with no success I decieded to try the Steelhead tactic of dark day, dark fly and fired one of my Flat Black (Hatch Match'r is now tying them). A gental take, a hook set and my 6wt bent double. "Oh that's a nice fish" I thought. The back and forth battle went on for quite a while before I got a good look at my fish. "Oh no it's a Spring, on my 6wt. I want that fish but I don't want to break my rod" went through my mind as the beast finned in the water before me. Then my plan of action, get set for a long fight and you are going to have to tail this one, because you will never be able to beach this one. Well it took three trys to get a firm grip on the fish and then I still couldn't lift it out of the water with one hand on the fish and the other on my rod. Finaly got it got on the beach and the rest is history. Took it over to Hatch Match'r Fly and Tackle to brag but wouldn't you know it Randy was at the Slough chasing Ho's. Opened the trunk and showed his partner Bill, so the catch is verified. My wife and daughter took some pics with the dit camera when I got home, If I can ever figure out how to post them I will put them on this site.

Newsman sure has non conventional flys. I give up. So far I have no luck in finding on the internet any of the fly patterns you use.  :P

Good job on the spring. wow, that must have been a battle on a 6 weight.  What kind of shape was the spring in.

She was in great shape but went dark after I had here in the bank. Bill most while caught in fresh water do that. When I cleaned here out half her roe was still solid. As for the flies I come up with many of my own patterns because I don't have confidence that what I see in the stores or in the books will do the job. Check out Hatch Match'r Fly & Tackle in Maple Ridge I supply them with samples of my proven patterns and they are tying them.

A 30 lb spring is an extremely big fish for a 6 wt rod.  But - if you play it right and the fish "cooperates", you have a chance.  The biggest I landed was a 40+ pound whitey at the Vedder using a 8 wt rod.  It was a big ugly buck that must have already been tired out when I hooked him.  That's the largest fish on the fly for me - but definitely not the "nicest" fish!  Anyway - good job on the 30 pounder on the 6 wt!  Whew!   :P
