River Trout fishing
« on: December 01, 2005, 04:57:59 PM »

Hi Everyone,

Love the site and the great tips and reports that everyone (ok most people) provide. With all the down time in between speices and some people talking about trout, I'm wondering if anyone would be willing to share a few locations. Personaly never done any winter trout fishing except accidentally when fishing for steelies.
Please help!!, I need a good excuse to get out as i need my nature fix.

Thanks

Timbo, there are no specific "hot spots" for winter trout fishing in Southern BC, because the trout are highly migratory, always on the move to find food wherever it is available. As a result, you may hit no fish for several trips in a row, then find yourself hooking dozens during one outing. This fishery is very exciting, and relaxing too as less people participate due to the amount of work you have to put in.

Some of the generic locations for you to start from include:

  • Alouette River
  • Pitt River
  • Nicomen Slough
  • Stave River
  • Harrison River
  • Maria Slough
  • Vedder River
  • Squamish River
  • Little Campbell River
  • Fraser River from Chilliwack to Hope

The species you are targeting this time of the year include:

  • coastal cutthroat trout
  • rainbow trout
  • bull trout
  • mountain whitefish

The key would be to match your presentation to their feed - Egg patterns in the winter months, minnow/fry patterns in the spring months.

Here are a few photographs of trips from last winter.

Thanks Rod for the advice. Have you ever fished the little campbell river. It is right by my house but I can't imagine the fishing to be all that great. How about the nicomekyl or the serpentine?

Thanks,

Tim

Little Cambell has cutthroat, check the regs, I think you can only fish below the 8th Ave bridge, access is not as easy as the Nick or Turpintine
