Sculpins in the Chilliwack-Vedder
« on: October 28, 2011, 06:47:08 PM »

Was out fishing the Chilliwack- Vedder today with a good friend and, an even older guy than me ;).  As old guys tend to do (between us we have over 100 years of C-V angling memories) we discussed the old days; how the C-V has changed both physically and dynamically, and how the fish populations and anglers have changed as well.
Lew and I talked about the one time huge Rocky Mountain Whitefish populations; I remembered the prolific Largescale Sucker spawning run in the lower Vedder and Sweltzer Creek during early summer, about 45 years ago.
We also discussed sculplins and how we both honed our fishing skills catching these small fish in rip-rap along the dikes near Vedder Crossing. Back then, these “bullheads” made great bait for what we then called Dolly Varden.

Sadly, neither of us could remember the last time we saw a sculpin in the C-V …
So, any anglers out there still see these cute little buggars?

I remember as a kid catching lots of bullheads, white fish and suckers in the lower river around yarrow during summers about 15 years ago. Some of the large scale suckers we caught very quite big too.

I cannot remember catching a large scale sucker or sculpin since back then. I did actually catch a couple white fish last year during steelhead season in the upper on single jensen eggs.

I am happy to report that my fishing buddy and I caught two largescale suckers in one day near Yarrow two weeks ago. One was really large - a good 20 inches and over 4 pounds. Both were caught on salmon egg imitation - one on the fly rod, another with gear.

I also caught a large scale sucker on the fly, but this was in the spring on a minnow pattern fishing the tailout of a run just below the crossing.  I was actually quite surprised by it as it actually jumped a couple of times right after I set the hook.  You can imagine my surprise when I pulled in a 16 inch sucker.  No sculpin on the fly in the Vedder yet, even though I do get them all the time when beach fishing for coho.
