I was fishing the mouth of the Nic the  other day, and observed schools of small fish, 2 or 3 inches long leaping out of the water in unison, like schools of flying fish. Oh mighty Rodney ;D ;D ;D, what were they????

It looks no doubt a kind of shad because it has black dot(s) behind the gill cover.  And thinking about the distribution of shads it is probably American shad.  Wow! :o

I was not close enough to see markings, but that is the shape of the fish that I saw a the mouth of the Nic.
