arrived at KWB around 6am and found there was only one other fisherman there. i started fishing with roe, wool and spinners for 2 hours and got no bite at all. fished the slow and fast flow, pocket water and etc. by the time i left at around 8am, a few BB'ers shown up and started BBing near under the bridge.
drove up to allison pool and fished for another 2 hour, same thing! 4 other fishermen there had zero action as well. didn't see anything that looked close to a fish the whole morning until i visited the hatchery, lots of dark spring were holding at the channel. the worker there was releasing steelhead smolts at that time, he told me that the steelhead population has been increasing over the years, so that was the only good news i heard the whole morning.
gave up the vedder and went to my favourite destination, the stave at around 12, i was surprised to see there were actually lots more fishermen working their gears there. the summer run of spring is small here and i would need more than luck and skill to catch one here. i started fishing at my usual spot just below the dam, bottom fishing with shrimp and roe. about half an hour later, i got one huge tap on my rod and the line started pulling away, so i set the hook, Fish on! the fight was on for about a minute or so..i couldn't tell from the fight that what kind of fish it was at the other end of the line, i just thought i've caught a jack or something.... and when i landed it not long later, it turned out to be a big my friend northern pikeminnow! the biggest one i've ever caught. around 3lbs, 18inches. holy moly.. i have never seen a pike minnow that big in person before.
another half an hour of none-action (lots of other pikeminnows), i called it quit and head back to vancouver before the traffic rush. i am surprised of how thick the population of northern pikeminnow there at the stave river, probably that explains why the salmonide population there is just not improving..
i came home empty-handed, but all in all it was a nice trip going out. i am heading to the Cap now, hopefully i would have something to share later on... see u guys. tight lines.
