bar fishing Aug 3
« on: August 03, 2006, 11:29:48 PM »

Woke this morning at 5am "before the alarm" in anticipation of my first bar fishing outing in Chilliwack with local fishing legend Chris Gadsden. On the road at 6am, and after stopping by a couple tackle shops for supplies we meet at island 22 boat launch around 9am. Before the leaf craft is launched I get a chance to speak to a few anglers putting there boats on trailers and all of them seemed to have limited out on sockeye. In no time we arrived at the maple leaf bar#2 and start setting things up, a couple friends of Chris are the only ones on the bar, and one of the fellows had caught a nice  jack spring already. Some time goes by then we all see a sockeye jump close to shore, then it jumps again and we realize it was hooked on the far rod! "we didnt hear it because someone forgot to put a bell on the rod ::)"I run like mad to grab the rod and start bringing the fish in but just as it was close to shore it gave a few headshakes that sent it on the way back up river to finish her business :'(. more time goes by and we all perk up when we hear the bell on the boat rod start, Chris gives a good hookset and passes the rod to Mary, this is a larger spring that takes a run down river, shortly after the hook pops out. That would be our only action for the day, but a great time was had by all, many thanks to Chris for an enjoyable day out and the good bar fishing tips.

A very enjoyable day fishing with lucky and Mary yesterday, even though we were not fortunate enough to land the two fish we hooked on the bar rods both lucky and Mary had a brief tussle with the two fish.

Frank who was fishing with us hooked and landed a jack spring that he caught before we got to the bar.

He had caught his 2 sockeye earlier down at Grassy Bar. :o

Talking of the sockeye, I took the Chilliwack Progress photojournalist down to Grassy in the Leaf Craft as well yesterday and she shot a number of photo's from the boat of the activity going on. Thanks to the occupants of the boats who allowed me to get in among them for the photo shoot. ;D

There must have been a hundred plus of them squeezed in, in boats and from the shore.

If you are interested in seeing the photo and the story please go to the Chilliwack Progress web page at http://www.theprogress.com/

Thanks for the good company yesterday Shawn and Mary we will do it again one day. O, I never did get your 2 PM's before the trip. ???

Were there people bottom bouncing that bar or just barfishing? I was hoping to get out tomorrow and wet a line.

One bb ing but there should be room for barfishing. Down at Wellington there was room also and of course there is Maple Leaf Bar #1. With this being the long weekend and then sockeye fever will be really settling in. Parking at Island 22 may be more of a challenge than finding a place to bar fish. It opens at 5 AM now, a hour earlier than before, to accommodate the hordes of sockeye seekers. ;D
