A festive and productive pier day on August 16th
« on: August 16, 2006, 02:55:48 PM »

Today we had the same crew who came out with us at yesterday's outing. ;) Armed with the skills and knowledge that they were given yesterday, they were ready to do some serious fishing. ;) The gradual incoming tide in the morning was very ideal, which usually means the fish are plentiful. We started our day with float fishing, as it is the easiest way for a kid to spot a bite.

Today we had plenty of company. The floating dock at No. 2 Road pier was almost packed, but the atmosphere is a friendly one. Around ten other Chinese anglers were fishing with their long poles, while the odd families showed up to try their luck as well.

The bite was on right from the beginning. We started the day with this lovely peamouth chub. ;)

This was followed by a few shiners, before the same angler pulled out something that caused a bit of excitement on the pier. ;)

The next couple of hours, the shiner perch kept on showing themselves at the end of the lines. ;D

We were then bored of catching too many shiners, so it was time to give the pacific staghorn sculpin, aka bullhead, a try. ;)

When fishing for sculpins, it is important to make sure the kids are aware of the spines that sit behind the head.

Today's total catch was between 40 and 50 fish, not bad for second timers. ;)

Just going over some files right now, I am fairly sure that it is an american shad. I'll get a confirmation from some others soon.
