After some persuading, Nina accompanied me to Garry Point Park once again for a brief spincasting session.
We arrived and saw the busy Saturday boat traffic in front of the park, causing constant wakes along the shoreline. Ths wasn't too good, as generally I find spincasting for anything in the Tidal Fraser River is best when the water is flat. That's probably why I have gotten a dozen fish in the past during morning sessions when there were not many boats out yet.
Nevertheless, you just never know what can happen with a lure in the water, so we began casting in one of the shallow bays. I decided to go with a 3/8oz spoon on the light spinning rod. I missed a hard tap just several casts into it. After Nina lost one of my spinners
, we decided to give a new spot a try. While fishing at the second spot, I had a brief chat with a gentleman who reads the forum.
Not long after, I spotted a couple of people netting close to shore. Not knowing what was going on, Nina and I went over to chat with the gentlemen who were netting. I asked what they were going for. "Smelt.", one gentleman replied. I originally thought smelt was still closed but the gentleman informed me that it reopens on August 15th every year. Anyways, it's good to be sure by asking of course, and always able to learn something in return.
We eventually ended up at our original spot, I wanted to see my first hard tap would translate into something more. It did, on Nina's rod.
She hooked a good sized fish that took several aggressive runs with some splashing on the surface. It was a pretty big pikeminnow, closer to what we would normally get at Garry Point Park. Nina slipped her fingers down its lower lip, unhooked the fish, but it slipped right off as she was getting ready for the photo.
Her fish was caught on a smaller 1/5 spoon with a strip of pink prism tape on its back.
Seeing Nina's success, I tied on a pink spinner, moved a bit closer to her, and focus on the shallow part of the bay to see if there was another one around.
There was.
Somehow I felt two strong pulls just after my spinner landed in the water. That was strange, because normally the spinner wouldn't work properly unless it was retrieved at a higher speed. Thinking that it was just the bottom, I continued reeling but I was prepared to strike if the fish came back. As the spinner approached the rocks, it came back for one more take! I set the hook, and found a medium sized pikeminnow at the end of my line.
After a few more misses, we called it a day. Another one-hour outing resulted in two hookups.
