2006 fall chum economic fishery openings

The economic chum beach seine fishery will take place from October 17th to October 23rd from 8 am to 5 pm each day.  This fishery largely takes place on the Fraser River just downstream of the confluence with the Harrison River.

Common courtesy is to be exercised by all parties when fishing in close proximity.

Any problems should be reported to Sto:lo Fisheries Commission, the RCMP and the DFO ORR line.

The Tidal Fraser also has an economic chum fishery opening, for Musqueam and Tsawwassen bands from October 17th to 20th.

October 17 08:00 to 08:00 Friday October 20, 2006 from the mouth of the Fraser
River, to the power lines immediately downstream of the Port Mann bridge.

Only individuals designated by the Musqueam and Tsawwassen Indian Bands are
authorized to participate in this fishery. 

Sale of chum, chinook and mortally wounded sockeye caught under this licence is
permitted.  Sale of coho caught under authority of this licence is not
permitted.  All aspects of the communal licence will be enforced.

funny... it doesn't mention what they are permitted to do with the steelhead they will no doubt intercept...... and why would they allow coho retention? Beach seining is considered a selective fishing method so would this not permit them to simply toss the coho and steelhead back into the river??? Oh well..... the "wisdom" of DFO/FOC will never cease to amaze me.

The wild coho and steelhead are required to be released. Each beach seine will have a Sto:lo monitor.

I've seen this seine thing, and I would consider all released fish a dead fish. while on the fraser last year I witnessed the aboriginal peoples seining. they reef the net high on shore, while the fish are scrambling everywhere, 4-10 aborignals run around selecting the ones they want and throw/kick the others the don't want back into the river......brutal releases, and some were out of the water for a good 5 minutes tops before being released.

Some one tell me this is not ethical and that I should call the next time I see this.....
