Will the Cold Up North Kill The Pine Beetles
« on: November 27, 2006, 09:24:12 AM »

I see the temperatures in the North is getting pretty cold with the Arctic outbreak of air. I wonder if it is cold enough to take care of these critters.

I heard if it gets cold early in the season before they build up a sort of anti freeze chemical in there system they will die off. I hope it is cold enough now, anyone an authority on this?

Thanks

I heard that it needs couple of weeks of minus temperatures for nature to do its thing.

Probably won't be cold long enough, and the other problem is the extent of the outbreak. Stretches from  areas surrounding Vanderhoof all the way down and over to Merrit, parts of Manning Park, and also down to the Okanagan Valley. Will be sad to see what the final results will be to the  pine forests in B.C, 4 or 5 years from now.

Pine beetles can only be killed with at least a week long cold below -35C.

Bill you are right ,at least two weeks of -40 temps is what it takes to totally eliminate them.

Two weeks at the begining or end of winter before they develop antifreeze to protect themselves. Was in the paper today saying it was too late. All the red forests in BC already say too little, too late.
