Hooked On Prawnics
« on: January 01, 2007, 07:14:57 PM »

Howdy folks, can anyone post photos of their rigged prawn setup? I`ve used the search function and found plenty on prawns and curing with a couple of tips on rigging these things up.

AllwaysFishing has a detailed method but I`m looking for another simple way to do this as I`m not sure which way the prawn should sit in the water and where the hook should be so when the fish hits you get a good hook set. A photo would really help me out 8)

Cheers

I hooked mine through the top of the tail, pulled the hook through, reverse the hook and hooked it through the underbelly and out the top. Stays on a long time.

I use fish freaks way. Stays on the hook and looks nice and normal! Try to use live ghost shrimp, it gives u that little edge that u always need when steelheading

I dont think it really matters how you rig them as long as they stay on the hook.  And interms of one way being better than another or one bait being better, as long as they stay on the hook you are fine.   I have caught steelhead on pink worms while fishers directly above and below me were fishing ghost shrimp...didn't help them on little bit!  I think its more a matter of getting a decent presentation (worm, eggs, spin n glo, ghost ship, prawns, spinners, spoons, jigs....etc,etc,etc) into the strike zone.

BTW, I fish shrimp this weekend.  I procured them red then stored them in a zip lock in the fridge with coarse pickling salt (maybe 2 table spoons).  The procured colored them up nicely (after an overnight soak) and the salt toughened them up.  They were just the shrimp ring type and I just hooked them thru the thick meaty part.  They stayed on for a good long time.

i used to only fish with ghost shrimp but and believe that this is ultimately the best bait for steelhead. however due to laziness...i moved to cooking  up prawns or shrimp and stucking a toothpick through its back to its tail so that it stayed straight and didn't twist up your leader. i then hooked it through the tail and wrapped it up with baitsaver.
however due to becoming more lazy and successful with cocktail shrimp i think i will just be using this for now on. i just take off tail. attach the meaty middle section to the hook and then take the tail piece and attach it to the hook as well. i then take the baitsaver and wrap it so that it doesn't come off. i also have wool and a corkie attached to each hook.

this has been very effective. key = baitsaver thread.

Spider thread. Works great. It is elastic, really thin and it keeps the shrimp on. I just tie a piece to my leader and then wrap the shrimp a few times. But if your shrimp is cured you should not have to use it.
