Hi, Anybody care to report on this reel, I am looking at the 300 model for the Fraser Fishery. It looks like it may stand up better than a calcutta.

Hi Sassyboy, I wrote a review of the 203 model in Nov. on FWR.  You may want to take a look for it.  What I can add is I am sure that the Luna will outcast a Calcutta.

The best way too describe the luna is it's a smooth reel.  It doesn't have the fish pulling torque of the TE but IMO that is the only place it falls short.  Will it stand up better than a Calcutta?  I have a millionaire CVZ 300 ( the model the luna replaces) and it has developed a problem with the sideplate coming loose while fishing within about a year and a half of owning it.  This causes the gears to unmesh and creates a grinding nosie.  The reel literally falls apart while I'm fishing.  I have to put pressure on the handle while reeling in/fighting a fish to keep the gears aligned and the reel together.  I have taken it apart many times and tightened up the screws that hold the sideplate together but the just keep coming loose within a few hours of fishing.  I now have the reel a Mikes and he is gonna try putting some locktight on it.  If that doesn't work I'll be sending it back to Daiwa to let them know what I think of their top of the line baitcaster.  I have also had problems with Calcutta reels so I won't say one is made better than the other.  Too bad the new Penn Torques don't have a levelwind cause they look SOLID .

Eagleye, try this.  Loosen the spool tension know on the handle side, then tighten the side plate on the other side.  After I did this, the sideplate has not come off in many trips.  Prior to this, I didn't know, but I tighten the side plate and after changing the spool tension, the side plate would come loose.  Good luck and let us know what the solution is.  Thanks.

the few guys i know that own the LUNA are exceptionally pleased with it. Haven't fished one myself but i have fished the TE version of the calcutta. The only downside i found with the TE was that the drag takes a bit to actually settle where it is adjusted to.... can be a problem on smaller fish but didn't seem to be as noticeable on the larger springs. I have fished the same base model calcutta 400 for the past 3 years for fraser and saltchuck and have never had an issue...
If i where to be looking at a new reel though, I wouldn't hesitate to check out a LUNA... one of the better products to come out of Daiwa in the past bunch of years.... and they at least recognize that there are left handed fisherman, unlike shimano, who still refuse to make a base model calcutta 400 in lefty model.

Thanks for all the replies I think I may up getting one. My Calcutta took a beating on the fraser this year.
