Went out on the cheakamus to a few of my favorite spots today. Water was like gin and it was snowing quite hard out there. Have been out half a dozen times in the last week and a half on the Squamish and Cheakamus for bull trout and dollies without so much as a bump. Was using my 8 wt. with a flesh/minnow pattern fishing the edge of a pool and while i was stripping the fly in WHAM! and the fight was on. Funny enough i thought probably a bull or dollie but this fish was much more acrobatic than the dollies and bulls i have caught before. After a good effort on its part i got it closer in and to my astonishment it was beautiful 5-6lb. wild steelie, got it to shore and sent it on its merry way thanking it for giving me the lovely suprise. I had never caught one before or really went out targeting them specifically because its a pretty small run up the Squamish river valley but today i think i am a changed man. I have been walking around since about noon with the biggest s#$@t eating grin ive ever had....kicking my own my friend for not have that damn camera with me.
all and all a great day out on the river
