Hatchery enhanced rivers. Secret or no Secret?
« on: February 05, 2007, 05:28:42 PM »

So this topic has been brought up a fair bit lately. For the first 2 years on these forums I used to think that the smaller flows should be kept a secret and should not even be reported on. I took all the pro's and con's on this topic and decided to really give this some thought about a year ago. I decided that if a river or system produces hatchery fish that they are not a secret. I believe it is up to the individual posting if they feel they want to share what system and where they fished. Even if it is some of my local flows I don't mind anymore since they have a hatchery on them and the fish are there to be fished. Limits have been placed on the amount of fish you are able to retain so who am I to say that someone cant post where they fished? I don't own the river. If I bring someone to a spot and told them I would appreciate it that this be kept a secret than I would expect that person to respect that. Other than that I don't have a problem with anything else.

If a river does not have a hatchery and only has wild fish this completely changes. Some rivers only have wild fish and most of these systems have no retention on them so I would say these rivers should be kept somewhat a secret. Sure their are some of us that are almost completely C&R fishermen and if the river is open to fish than by all means fish it. The reason I would keep it a secret is to prevent poachers. If a poacher was to read a report he might just go to this system after hearing fish being caught and take all he wants.

Depends on the system. I will post reports and pics from the veddar but I will not post pics or report from one of the other systems that I like to fish. I just like the peacefulness that is on that system and do not want to ruin that by posting about my success on that river. Before you know it you have a bunch of people fishing it that would never of known about it. Call me greddy but I just love the peace and quiet some times.

I dont post many reports on that same system but I dont keep it a secret. I will show people I know that system and if I like them show them some of my hot spots. I dont think their are enough fish to really make it busy. You cant retain much on that system making it not very popular to people that dont live close by. You are only allowed to keep 1 coho where these people can go to the Vedder and retain 4. Most people will want to retain fish and this will keep people away.

I think all wild fish should be released...but if it's far enough away that I know my report or pic's can do it any damage, I would do that....

There are no true secrets, just rivers less fished than others. As far as hatchery enhanced rivers go.........come one, come all.......As for rivers with small runs of wild fish such as Zipperlip Crk. Don't even bother asking.

They are meant to be caught but it would depend on the system and the situation. If the river has a smaller amount of hatch fish you should do c&r until that population grows or else that system will gradually be fished out which in my favorite little system would be the second time my opinion.

These small, less well known streams don't have many fish. People like to go where they will catch fish. There are no secret flows in the Lower Mainland that have a lot of fish. Sure, you may have good days on some of them, but there's not a lot of fish. These streams are no secret to poachers, they're already there. If a gold rush of guys go storming to these rivers, they will likely get skunked and not return often, but maybe some of them will catch a fish or two, keep coming back, appreciate the river, and organize a clean-up on it. I don't like the assumption that all these guys that show up will be there to thrash the creek, they're no different than you or I.

Streams with tiny runs of wild fish, I would keep those a little more hush hush, but once again, few fish means few catches, guys won;t keep coming back.
