what type of coin am i looking at to get started tying flies? i don't want to spend alot because if i don't like it or whatever i dont want to have $300 worth of stuff in the closet. is $100 good to get going?(vise, hooks, basic materials)

Not sure where you live but Sea Run (Babcocks) has a fly tying lessons starting Feb 22nd
you can buy the starter kits but they have cheap gear in them
Buy a good vice and bobbinn holder to start off
it is a bit costly like any new hobby when you have to buy all the gear
like Nobby said just aim at a few types of flies to tie at first
but do get a lesson or two
you will be hooked once you start

Go down to WalMart and pick up one of their fly tying kits. Angler is the brand name it will set you back about $40 and is a good starter. I am critical of most of the fly tying kits I have seen, most have a pile of stuff we don't use here in the west. However since the Angler & Dragonfly kits are put together here you won't find that a problem.

Go to your local tackle store and ask them for a basic fly tying kit, it should cost your around 80 bucks and upgrade your bobbon to a cermic tip or full cermic tube at the same time.. snapping thread during tying is not fun.  Also, a good thing to have but not a must  is a step by step fly tying DVD.. watch it a couple times, get used to handle material, then set your vice infront of the TV while playing the DVD.. follow the step, go back, pause....  Its way eaiser to learn...  goodluck

I have a intro course starting March 7th at Maple Ridge College. Six hours; very basic, very easy, very effective, and the Angler kit is a must have.

My suggestion is to attend one of the flytying nights and talk to the people there. They can provide you with the rundown on what you really need to get started. They may have some excess tools which they can give or sell to you cheap. Like others have said, stay away from the beginner flytying kits you find in alot of the tackle shops. They are usually of poor quality.
