Vedder March 27
« on: March 27, 2007, 11:58:42 PM »

Another sunny day finds me heading out for half day fishing. Arriving about 1:30pm, it is windy & chilly in the shady area. The lower river is quite muddy, 6" max. Mid river is hopeless. Wash-out area around 18" visbility (wow watch out those big holes in the road, why no one fixing them  ???). Upper river above Ranger is reasonably good, around 2-3' visibility but the flow is quite high and strong, so the usual runs are quite turbulent.

Judging on level and clarity, I choose to fish tight spots where a fish sitting there just can't miss my repeated presentation. On one of those highly fishy spots I drifted first a big worm but no taker. Knowing the fish may prefer ghost shrimp in late season as now, I changed up to a ghost shrimp imitation. While I was changing up, a guy walked down from a higher run & drift his presentation right in front of me. Luckily he was separated from my spot by a small slough and his presentation tends to lift too high when it drifted so far down to my spot as he was holding his drift. Without delay I casted out my shrimp to the deadliest spot. Wham! The float dipped ahd a strong steelie took the presentation. Alas, my hook set was not too strong, and the heavy fish was starting to run into the heavy current. It made a jump and both me and the guy saw that it is a large specimen, a bit longish, and with a tint of colour. I estimated it to be a buck around 15-16 lb range but can't tell wild or hatch. There was no way I could control the fish in the fast current and it kept on going down river using the current to take line. I walked gingerly along and raise my rod as high as I could. Eventually, I got stopped by a small jam of lose branches and bushes, and I could not go further. All I could do was to hold and fought the beast there. The current was too strong to have any chance to ease the fish up. Then, as expected, the hook popped and the line went limp. Gosh! I turned to look up to the guy and he made a large-fish sign back. Sigh!  Expecting there may be another fish, I did some clean up of that small jam before I went back to fish again. But it is not to be. Only one chance and I lost it. But I have got to be thankful for the chance to fight that strong late season fish. Nice weather and a nice day out.  :)

Thanks for the detailed report SH. Nice report.

But, yes, those big holes above Allison on the main road. They have been there since the last flood. Why the heck they are not patched up like out here in Vancouver area (those created by ice)? You bet if a biker hits them at high speed, it will be very dangerous. If a car hits them, consider a major front-end alignment job and an expensive repair bill. Funny thing is, there are not even signs there to indicate approaching hazardous conditions in the road - some irresponsible city officials in Chilliwack. If it happens here in Vancouver, they will be fried by voters and residents.  >:(  They will have to watch out for legal actions if some one gets seriously injured due to their negligence.

Any comment there Chris?

Isn't it the responsibility of BC Ministry of Transportation and the Fraser Valley Regional District?

I was out last thursday and was asleep at the wheel and had two good hits, one with head shakes but was too busy puffing my cigar and missed a good hookset...going out tomorrow and not giving up...though it's getting harder to leave the fly rod home now...

I can understand if these are large holes in some dirt roads along the Vedder where very few people drive pass them. But these are on a busy main road used by so many motorists. They have been there since the last flood. Look, after the flood, they repaired the dyke along Wislon Rd., but nothing has been done on the Wash-out section of the main road. Go figure.  ???  :(

Yes. I will talk to someone about it tomorrow. Thanks for bringing it to our attention as I had not been out there to see it.

Please phone Ministry of Highways in Chilliwack and tell them of your concern. Let me know when you have and I will do a follow up call if you donot get some satisfaction.

There are signs at both ends to give you warning, if the signs are not there they were stolen and will be replaced normally before the end of the working day.
Emil Anderson Maintenance looks after Chilliwack Lake Rd if you have a complaint call them.

So, they put small and inconspicuous sign up and then just leave the road unpatched? And motorists have to deal with near 30-40 ft of deep pot holes on their own by watching for small signs by road side?  There was definitely no verbal warnings about all these holes on a supposedly paved public road. Considering most cars speed through that open section of the road, this is not adequate warning on my book.  But if people in Chilliwack don't complain, why should people in Vancouver worry? There are enough people working or camping past that section of the road, and I am surprised no one even complain after all this time.  End of steelhead season soon for us fishermen, and we won't be back until coho time  ;D
