I keep looking for the Albion test fishery report, but DFO has not posted any for this year yet. Anyone know the reason? Is it the freshet?
Speaking of rising waters, the long range weather forecast calls for HOT temperatures starting June 3-4. Rapid melting effects will be felt within 3-4 days, they say, and the crest after 9-10 days of sustained hot temps. I guess we'll find out in about 3 weeks if there will be any flooding.
Bar fishing? Well, that doesn't seem possible until sometime in July at this rate.

At this time it is not being conducted. It is a complex situation and this is not the only one that is not operating. As I am going fishing  I do not have time to hunt up the information paper why they are not but I know someone else will.

They are not allowed to sell the fish to generate funds to support the test fishery anymore.  Therefore , due to lack of funds the test fishery is no more.  That is what I heard about the situation.

is this a FN thing?  ie because whitey is running the test fishery, running the boats in the test fishery and then selling them that this goes against a FN constitutional rights to priority access to food fish???  what a load of crap (if I am right in my assumption).

How can they manage the run and its allocation between FN, commercial, and sports fishers if a major component of their population estimating tools are canceled?!?!?!  Sounds like trouble to me.

the lack of the Albion test fishery is due to a court ruling that DFO can not use the fish to pay for the test fishery so therefore no money to pay for the fishery so it's not happening at this time.

That's a shame. The test fishery is one of the few visible services DFO performs.  I'm not saying there aren't other worthwhile services, but perception is important in public relations. DFO is going to be the loser in this PR mistake.

Thanks Gord. I guess one thing it will save a few hundred fish saved now including some Thompson River steelhead. Not sure if this will outweigh the science gathered from this previous work or not.

Maybe the acoustic boat at Mission will be suffice.

I am late getting away fishing maybe I will get a chinook that could have been caught at the Albion Test Fishery if it was running.

Yup this is a shame. It was a great resource for us sport fishermen. Also a great tool in seeing how many fish are returning. Now we have to go on what we are told instead of seeing hard numbers.

My question still remains...what was behind the "legal" decision?  Is this a FN/priority to food fish issue...if so when is this country ever going to learn that political correctness sometimes needs to be put aside for the greater good.  If DFO looses a tool used in enumerating a salmon run then that means EVEN LESS ACCURATE DATA!!!

Its not like they have a good track record in terms of population estimating so to hear they have lost one source of input worries me.  And it angers me why this is happening!

I think the decsion was based out of a court case in eastern canada, not 100% sure.
