Fraser River Sockeye Forecast

6 MILLION SOCKEYE FORECAST THIS YEAR - A total of about six million sockeye are expected to return to the Fraser River, according to a pre-season projection from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO).
That's down from an estimated 8.7 million sockeye from last summer.

Well its not the peak year for the sockeye and we need to give the fish a chance. I would say not just for sporties but also for native and commercial. No opening period. If they do give an opening I cant see it being more than a week.

  I just want to fly fish for pinks. sure it would be nice to have a couple of sockeye in the freezer but I personally think that if the numbers are not there then keep it closed. It is better to miss out on the revenue for one or two years then for ever when the fish are gone. No amount of money is worth losing an entire species of salmon.

Let's hope the snow melt will keep the water temperature to ensure a higher survival rate on the returning sockeyes.

In 1999 the high water levels and flow  put a lot of stress on the sockeye even though the temperatures were down, I wouldn't count on an opening as a lot of people that live near the river could be launching their boats off their lawns and tying them to their sundecks, me included. In a worse case scenario I could be standing on my roof dipnetting them out of my driveway, so theirs a lot of other stuff to worry about the river this year than whether or not everyone from the city will get to come out and snag a few sockeye.

Hopefully the river wont flood and hopefully the sockeye wont open. And that the springs will show up in july on the vedder.

It was good to us last year wasn't it Roekid?  Well, it was good to some of us.  Mind you, what do I know, I only made it out for a couple hrs all season!! ;D

what setup do you guys use for this.  i'm new to river fishing and really only started in december but am looking forward to this summer and fall
