Need help with my spinning reel
« on: June 14, 2007, 07:14:04 PM »

I have a new float and fly rod set up.  I took it outside to play with it on the grass when I noticed when I go to reel in the line the handle sticks. The bail does not drop back into place and line is falling everywhere.  What causes the handle to stick???

Thanks
Sandy

What brand and model is it Sandy? If it is new, take it back to the store and see if the problem can be solved or get a replacement.

When I use my spinning reel, I avoid using the handle to turn the bail back to avoid problems overtime.

yeah I would take it back and ask about it. That model is pretty reliable like most middle to higher end Shimano reels.

I've had the same problem.  Look closely, and you may find some dried salmon eggs or worm guts or something that is keeping the bail from releasing.  Or it may just be worn out.  If the line continues falling off the spool, you probably have too much line on the spool.

got my old coffee grinder since i was a kid still and i gave away one of my better ones to my nephew. And it has done the same thing for i think 9 years now. But it still hauls in the pinks. I find that it doesn't matter at all, like Reel Wrangler said just push it down. Doesn't make a real difference.

THE SPRING NEEDS TO BE WORKED IN. Don't take it back to the store. First get it to the position where the bail sticks and torque the handle until the bail flips. The spring is fairly strong when you first buy the reel and needs working in. I've done it about a hundred times for customers that didn't know any better. Do that about 20 times and it should be reasonably easier.

It it's new I'd also suggest taking it back to have it looked at.  It may only need to be worked in or could be a mechanical problem.  I had a older spinning reel that started doing this and I needed to manually close the bail as it wouldn't fully engage.  I can't tell you how many fish I've lost with the bail opening as I set the hook.  Eventually after enough frustration I took a sledge hammer to the reel and fixed the problem...
