Anybody have any tips about fishing inTofino?
« on: July 19, 2007, 10:10:54 PM »

Planned a trip to Tofino at the end of the month with a couple of buds.  The plan is to flyfish for coho on the inside...I've done it once before with Weigh West so i know the general area for that.

My fear is that the coho might be late and we'll have to resort to going into the open salt for coho and/or springs.  The boat we'll be using is equipped with downriggers so at least we'll be somewhat prepared if we need to go deep.

The question is where are the best places to fish in that area?  Best set up, etc.? (ie. plug herring or artificials?)   Anybody going to be up that way during July 31-Aug.2?  Or does any body from the sight live up there?

We found the coho in really shallow water around a small island called the Cat Face or something to that extent.  I was fishing with a native buddy who lived on Flores Island with the Ahausat tribe.  All around that area we found the fish in water from the surface down to 35 feet (decent depths for a fly).

Hey Gooey...thanks for the reply.  Was that this year and recently? ... or at another time?  I've fished Catface before so I know that spot.

Did you guys fish the open water at all?  ie. trolling, etc.?

This was a few years back...we did a little jigging for salmon and trolling around flores...nothing too open though.  The guys I was with weren't very seasoned fishers.  we actually trolled by using 200lb hand lines with cannon balls on the end which were tied off to the mooring cleats...like I said, not seasoned fishers!!!  it kind of added to the experience tho.

We trolled hookies and jigged w buzz bombs and zinger.  eneded up with a few springs but mostly coho.  check your regs tho...as I was with band members, we we able to fish (and retain) coho in an area where others couldn't.  This was some time ago so the boundries may have changed.

Good luck
