Ruptured oil line gushing 'river of oil' into Burrard Inlet

BURNABY (NEWS1130) - Thousands of litre of oil are gushing out of a pipeline beneath the Barnet Highway in Burnaby, and the area is being evacuated. Witnesses are calling it a 'river' of oil, and say there is so much oil it's now pouring into Burrard Inlet, potentially becoming a major spill. A road crew apparently ruptured the line and the oil is shooting into the air and pouring downhill to the water.

Workers in the area are saying the line carries crude from oil tanker docks to a nearby refinery. Burnaby firefighters, police and oil workers are all responding. Evacuations are underway in homes from West of Inlet Drive, along Ridge, Belcarra Malibu Drive and North Cliff Cresent.

Just talked to my brother who works for the City of Port Moody, a road crew was digging and hit an high pressure oil line. The crew called BC 1 before digging and they had no maps of this line being there. Depending on clean up tonight the Barnet will be closed for 1 to 2 days. He said when he got there the oil was shoting over a 100' in the air.

   Now my fricken Deep Cove crabs are going to be worth more to the Americans than to me. Seriously though will this have a direct effect on the crabs? I know some of you will take this opportunity to say you would never eat crabs there anyway. I know its coming but what kind of studies are out there stating whether an oil spill will effect crabs or not? How long does it take to clean out? Please post any closures if you hear of any. Thankyou.

We also have the pinks that are going to be coming up the arm soon, we will have to wait and see how the spill impacts that fishery. They will probably have oil seeping into the inlet for a long time to come from this spill, as soon as it starts to rain its going to be flushing residue from storm sewers and ground water right into the inlet. We are very fortunate that this spill didn't happen last week during the rains we were having  or this would have been 100 times worse

Reports on the news tonight were saying that the oil was almost all contained immediately and that they are not expecting any serious ecological repercussions.  The only reaslistic threat is to sea birds and possibly seals.  Seeing as how Oil floats I would naturally assume that it would not seep down to bottom anyhow and your precious Crabs should still be ready for the pot.

I don't think so Robbie and those crabs will have an oily taste to them. Crude oil can sink or whatever type of oil in there is not supposed to be in there anyway. Or on the crabs that so many people like to catch. The crabs are precious indeed.

This Is horrible. Like some people said it will affect the food chain, and end up in us. Thats not all the damage its has caused!

I'd like to retract from my last post.  I went out on the water tonight and noticed oil slicks every where from the Second Narrows Bridge to all the way  up the Arm.  Oil was all over my boat and the smell of it was overpowering.  There were boats running around marked Burrad Cleaners looking for oil but it seemed as though all they did was look at it.  Pretty ugly.
