a question for our technical guys that know about outboards - I have a Yamaha 30HP 1994 model.. Now here is the issue, and it started just this Saturday while heading to Cates park from rocky point slip way.

Started fine, but half way to Cates it started, Splutter, just one or two small ones, I thought it was just clearing its throat, anyhow, got around the corner dropped the crab pots and as I was heading out, splutter, splutter and dead.. I pulled about 10 times and left it for 5 min, I chocked it and it started fine... But splutter, splutter when I accelerated, anyhow, I managed to fish and collect the pots again, but on the way back to rocky point, I planed no problem , but then splutter , splutter once or twice...again like its cleaning its throat. It also only seems to start while choke... it is an aggressive splutter though, from full throttle to dead is 1 second.

When I accelerate there are a few coughs but when I have rev's she goes fine, just this coughing now.

i know the premix is correct, and the fuel is clean..

could it be fuel pump or electrical - any ideas or reliable guys that could take a look...

sounds like the carb needs a good cleaning to me

Have you tried checking the spark plugs?

I have, and they are new...

How would I clean them? Is the a "card cleaner" availible?

I'm pretty sure seafoam will work, but I'd verify that with a mechanic.

you have to use carb cleaner. it usually comes in like a big can. Take the carb all apart and let soak. then then remove and blow out all the passages with compressed air. I usually repeat again then reasemble carb. also replace all gaskets and fuel pump at this point too

Thank you for the feedback, I was also almost sure it was fuel related..... See on the chuck...

just called up checkpoint.. They advise not to clean the outboards carbs with normal carb cleaner, you need to use combustion cleaner. Apparantly the normal carb cleaner damages the O rings in the carb....

The carb repair kit, filters, and the cleaner $ 100.00, lets hope it will all come back togther again...

I had the same symptoms last summer, took my boat into lordship marine and turns out I had alot of crud in my gas tank, they cleaned out my tank and cleaned the carb and I was good to go.
