Earliest Lower fraser Pink?
« on: August 13, 2007, 03:10:39 PM »

Just wondering the earliest anyone has caught a pink below the Alex Fraser? Tried today but didn't see anything. I don't care to know the peak times just wondering how early is to early. I love fishing and just want to know if their is a chance, no matter how small that chance is. I bet Rodney has caught some early ones.

I have not been out here, at least for fishing anyway. The water clarity has been poor and unfortunately most likely will be when the bulk of the run arrives. Catching them in murky water is not impossible, the water down here is much slower and the fish have a longer time to react.

The first day I caught them in 2005 was August 27th. The first day I caught them in 2003 was August 31st. We didn't catch them earlier because they were not found, not because a lack of trying. The earliest school I've spotted around Steveston was in 2003, around August 20th, but none were interested in biting the lure.

Some fish are definitely moving through right now, but the Fraser estuary is so wide that the fish are not as concentrated as the section in the Fraser Valley.

The pinks already are migrating up the mighty fraser, according to the albion test fishery's data. There was one pink caught in the Chinook test fishery, but don't forget pink is much smaller in size and those test nets are for the much larger Chinook, so lots of them pink must've sneaked through the nets. Give it a try, they are here now.

Where was this DMW? North or South Arm? I'm assuming it was the lower Fraser.

I've been out on the lower Fraser a few times over the past couple of weeks and this past week I've noticed a few surfacing and jumping (Could've been sockeye also) in the South Arm (around the Garry Point area and other places along Dyke Rd), with no luck on spoons and spinners.

The difference between surface signs of pink and sockeye salmon is pretty distinct. Sockeye salmon generally leap, clear out of the water. Pink salmon generally "fin" or roll by only showing their back on the surface.

Thats correct Rodney. And from what i have seen sockeye are usually out far from shore. Beyond casting distance. And pinks and chums in the lower fraser are close to shore. Whatever though I am getting hungry for fresh pink and I won't eat one untill I catch one in the lower fraser.

I think the earliest they were ever caught in the lower Fraser was around 1810. ;)

Been a Lerker for a while, decided to start asking some questions. I am still leraning......I live in Burnaby, I fished pinks with spoons 2 years ago around island 22 with a guide. Thought I'd try it this year on my own with my flyrod. What should I use, where should I go? I've heard mission bridge but I'd like to know if there is a closer place? Any help advice would be much appreciated!

Welcome aboard Bhinky. Try Ambleside and West Vancouver and Cates Park. They are alot closer than having to drive to Mission.
