Alberni report August 23rd - 27th, 2007
« on: August 27, 2007, 09:29:47 PM »

Legend ill post up this report since i said i would. Thanks for the tips and hootchie it was good to meet you.

Quick report. Most fish caught on green/white coyote at 70-80feet(alot deeper than the rest of the fleet was fishing) the rest on anchovies and pink hootchies.
Thursday night-Three lost
Friday morning -eight lost Evening-20lber
saturday morning- 20lber one lost evening-Zip
sunday morning- 30,27,25,20,20,20,7lb coho Released two 20s
Monday morning-One lost

Ok heres the full report with pics. Got there thursday night fished 3 hours that evening hooked 3 lost all including one over 30 that was in the net and somehow got out. Man im used to these 10-20lb springs on ECVI that you can net np.These fish are danm spunky at the net. This was a sign of things to come as the next day we lost 8 yes all 8 fish we hooked including 5 at the net most 15-25lbs. Dont know how we lost that many it was frustrating and emberessing. Finally figured out how they act when near the net and that evening landed a low 20s fish.Next morning hit another low 20s fish near the narrows. Yesterday morning was a blast. We slept in werent on the water till a bit after six. Trolled through that ugly crowd infront of china creek near the lighthouse and dialed in nicely.10 mins in hit a nice fish that popped off. 10 mins after that nailed a nice spring with some size to it.We actually entered the legion derby with about 100 other people. The leading fish from the day before was 31 and we could tell our fish was close so we ran in and weighed it quickly hoping to beat that. Weighed a bit under 30 on that china creek scale not sure how accurate it is.Was danm long but skinny as hell even though it was a female.Good enough for third in the derby after final weigh in After we weighed in that fish we had another hit 5 mins into fishing again landed a coho which there wasnt many of and while i was landing it the other rod pops while im barely in gear and 5 mins later landed a nice mid to high 20s spring. Next fish we were sleepin on as i hear some guy yell "might wanna look at your rod" takes me about 30 seconds to figure out and the fish is already running we landed another low 20s. Lines back down 10 mins later another bang double header in the middle of the crowd it was mayhem. We got both to the boat and kept the bigger mid 20s fish and released a low 20s fish. My buddy met up with us that evening to fish a few days and we went out that evening and he banged off 3 fish in no time. Bonked his first released the second and finished off his limit on the third. All 3 about 20lbs. This morning was slow after that commercial opening they cleaned up. We hit one large fish over 30 up at the narrows but he spit the hook
Most boats were hitting 1 or 2 fish a 6 hour morning so it was far from hot. We were lucky to dial in yesterday and get a few more still a great trip. Im moving to alberta till next summer so im done for the year. Tight lines

Thanks for the report!

I'll be fishing there on Wednesday.  Hopefully the fish numbers will build back up quickly after this commercial opening.  Otherwise we will head for the sound.  My friend and guide is willing to go as far as it takes to find fish.

Good grief! Good thing I'm not driving a boat among those, otherwise there would be alot of collisions. ;D

RossUk and IronNoggin also fished for two mornings and managed to land three chinook salmon, biggest was 25lb.

doug they will rebuild as they did this week. there was a commercial opening last week it took a day or two. The sound suprisingly isnt that hot right now. Rodney i was lookin for him but didnt see him. Most people get outta your way as we got a double header in the middle of the crowd and had to problems with other boats. Today however we had two boats a 30fter and a 25fter running full tilt between boats. They honest to god almost hit our rod tips they were maybe 15 feet away the water off the bow hit us. Roe kid im running a 15fter and its to small were lookin into an 18 or 19. I get out in most weather but put 3 guys and gear in there and there is not much room.

Kellya...

I've been following your season on the boards as you're an enthusiastic and obviously passionate fisher....and post a lot of pictures of your results.  ;D

Wondering how many Springs you and your immediate family members now have on your licenses?
How about Coho..sounds like you more than a few of those too... how many have you kept?

Not that I'm jealous or anything like that...I've been working, payin' the bills, etc etc etc...caught more fish than most in several lifetimes for a youngin' my age...

Just curious...  ::)

Thats my first coho of the year it was hatch. Not much fun on a trolling setup. So far i am at 11 out of 15 salmon allowed for the year in the straight of georgia. No family members have any fish. We have already eaten all those if you can believe it. On this trip there was 8 nooks kept and one coho with 3 people. Split up the fish. This is my last time fishing this year so the fish will last till maybe christmas. None goin to waste.

Sounds good.  I hope they stick around long enough instead of blasting up the inlet like they were doing.  We will be making the long run out anyways since we will have a decent shot of some action even if the springs don't cooperate. Plan on fishing Swale and Cree and maybe go out to the surfline if my guide/friend agrees to it.  Interesting that you are looking for a bigger boat because I have been browsing craigslist for one myself.  That 3 or 4 feet makes a big difference in comfort.  Myself, I am looking for something affordable and manageable 18 to 19 feet.  Just small enough so I don't get the temptation to take it out to the banks but big enough to be comfortable when the inlet blows up in the afternoon.  Anyways, good luck in school.  I'll post a full report when I get back.
