when you see a hit, wait a second or two.  give the fish a chance to pick up the bait fully with its sucker.  usually you'll know when that happens because the tip of your rod will start bouncing a little bit more vigorously.  sturgeons have a habit of letting go of their food, but circle and come back.

if its an obvious bite and the line goes slack take your rod and slowly real in the slack (have your tip at the 10 o'clock position), then wait until you feel the bite again...wait a little more for that tapping feeling (you have to judge it by the size of your bait) then when you think the fish has a firm hold...set your hook.  Good Luck  :)

so i took the family down to the river this afternoon, after ten minutes of setting up it was cast off! had some good hits but not a steady pull or constant hit :-\  tried to set the hook a couple of times but no luck :'( i may be to impatient.so after my sixth snag we went to another spot down further,( some one was in the spot earlier)  i rigged up threw out my bait, and after 20 min the bit was on this was a steady bounce ;D ;D, i set the hook and no sooner i jumped but only the head came out :D looked kinda like jaws for a second! nice head shake. fought  it for 10-15 min? felt like forever and my hart was pounding!! ( i hope my knots hold my brain thought :o)  i was able to get it to shore a nd when my brother went to grab its tail i shot off like a rocket! rite to some pilings :o :o :o snaggggg!! cupcakes!!! i could feel it take line but but when i would reel it in the line would stop. after some hart brake i broke the line off so i could catch it another day  :'(
