Fishing Barkley Sound August 29
« on: August 30, 2007, 10:21:34 AM »

I got back late last night from a good one day trip to fish on the WCVI.  The weather was nice and warm.  The fishing was not bad but you had to work for them.  Accompanying me on my trip was one of my fishing buddies and my Brother in Law.

We caught all our fish about 2 miles off shore just past the surfline near the middle of the sound.  There was lots of bait around.  So much so that at times all four rods and the downrigger cables would shake as passed through.  We hooked 6 springs and landed 3 with weights of 29,26 and 12.  We hooked alot of coho but most were wild including a nice one of about 15 pounds.  We managed to get  2 hatcherys and took home a total of 5 salmon.  Most of our fish were hooked on 6" coyote spoons without flashers.  I was so impressed with how well these spoons worked that I may never use bait again.  The fish were caught deep from about 70 to 120 feet.

We hooked quite a few coho but I heard that there were more further offshore.  The hatchery to wild ratio for us was about 1 hatch to 5 wild.  We also lost quite a few.  My friend's Yammy is about 6 years old and is 200 HP.  He says it is bulletproof and has not missed a stroke ever since he bought it.  He also uses a new 4 stroke 8HP yammie as a kicker.  We burned a total of about $240.00 in fuel running from the port out and back with about 9 hours of trolling on the kicker.  The islanders were smooth but they were the non-knuckle dusting ones which I had difficulty getting use to.  I am more use to the conventional MR2's.  With the way the seas were yesterday, you could have easily run a 17 or 18 footer on the outside.  According to my friend, its been a strange year all around.  Areas like Kirby and Beale have been slow and spotty.  Because of all the commercial openings in the upper inlet, fishing on the inside was very scratchy yesterday with most getting only 1 or 2 if any at all.

i was there from the 26-30th

we mostly fished 20-25  miles offshore biggest was 35 lbs and quite a few in the mid to high teens. fished for halis, only got one, twoo weeks ago we limited. lots of coho, some nice large clipped coho offshore. highlight was a 31 lb at 8pm in calm waters at the top of beale, maybe a half mile or soo off the rocks. the day i was leaving, heard that 3 miles off cree was hot, several over 40 lbs and 70 or so boats there...of course, got that tidbit from a buddy the night im gassing up to go down the channel the next morning. lots of people fishing around china creek and lower, didnt see anyone playing a fish. good luck to all those in the derby, keep the reports coming
