After advising Fish Assassin to catch the early morning flood tide and not showing up because sleep felt so much better, I was kind of envious but not surprised by his result this morning. The fish have been rather had to track down this season down here. After a week of scouting around, some pattern has finally emerged. It seems like most of the fish have been entering the river during the period just after flood tide, or the beginning of the incoming tide.
After seeing quite a few fish rolling around 1:00pm in the last few days, we decided to see if we could intercept some more at the same time. My dad and I arrived at the same spot again, where Spudcote and his dad were already fishing away. Rollers could be spotted within casting distance, so we geared up right away.
Within a few casts, I briefly hooked one. One cast later, I hooked yet another one but again it swam away freely after a few kicks. Moments later, Dad was into a good fish. After landing his first one yesterday, he has gained some confidence so the fight was not as frantic today. The big buck darted from one end to the other. The Fenwick HMX bent to its maximum as expected. This fish went for at least half a dozen short runs, before Dad was able to tow it to the net.
That was it for today! Fish continued to roll for another hour. Spudcote managed to hook and lost one after I gave him one of my spoons. His dad also managed to briefly hooked one as well. I guess that I should not have put after-market hooks on their spoons.
What a hot day, we decided to give fishing a rest by 4:00pm since no risers could be spotted.
Back to work after a quick afternoon break.
