Hi everyone - hope your season is going well. Well, today I got a deal I couldn't refuse. A 14 foot Lund car topper with a 10 horse merc outboard. Fully tuned and pretty much ready to go. So question is..what type of fishing does a guy do with type of boat? Where can it go, what should I avoid?

Avoid where the harrison meets the fraser @ calamity point.

When i first got my 12 foot boat, i started off going to alouette lake and getting familar with its operation. i would suggest you take it out on a lake for the first trip.
Salt water use is pretty fine. Mouth of the capilano and first narrows can get kinda hairy if you time it wrong. As can second narrows. Cates park is decent

As for river usage That size boat should be fine in the stave, or the harrison. I'd wait a while before venturing out in the fraser but you could do it

As for types of fishing, should be fine for salmon, trout, heck even sturgeon. I once saw a guy fishing and catching sturgeon out of a small canadian tire inflatable

It's always good to start on a smaller lake and get used to how the boat handles, and make sure you stop by canadian tire and get a required saftey kit for the boat. I think they're about $20. I run every piece of water out there in my little 14ft jon boat, but always play safe, make sure if you're heading out on the river to have your oars in the locks just in case something happens. I've seen alot of guys trying to make it to shore using the one stupid little paddle they keep on board.

When you get comfy playing on the lakes, give me a shout if you want to play on the Harrison, I've lead a more than a few guys out for the first time to show them that river.

I agree. I think a 10hp on a 14ft is a little underkill. I have a 20hp on a 14ft lund and would like a 25. I have takin it all over the lower fraser sturgy and salmon fishing. Depending on how deep the hull is the ocean should be ok however choose the right day.

Get an Operator license first b4 go fishing.

You don't need a card unless you are born ofter 1983...

Currently, proof of competency is required if you fall into one of two categories:

   1. You operate a pleasure craft fitted with a motor AND are born after April 1, 1983; or,
   2. You operate a pleasure craft, fitted with a motor, that is under 4m (13 feet) in length (regardless of age).

Aquaboy24, Like I said. If you'd like I'd be more than happy to lead you along the Harrison and down to the mouth so you can see the Fraser, your boat will be fine in these areas.

Just dont take it too far anywhere not really knowing the motor yet.
Better yet go with a buddy boat the first time out if you can.
The lake is a great idea for the first run.
Depending on width etc. your 10 hp might not be enough for the Fraser flow past Dewdney.
There are some decent local Salt areas that a boat like this would be fine as long as you keep your eye on the weather.

Get your boaters liscence as soon as possible, can get it on line easily, price is going up though and they are soon cancelling the online availabilty, better check into this!  Everyone will need one soon. Some good stuff, a lot of common sense though.
