Vedder Report Oct 27th 2007
« on: October 27, 2007, 04:41:27 PM »

Water was quite a bit better than yesterday. When we got to the lower Vedder, the water was at least 2 feet of visibility and I thought through the 4 hours of fishing, it got a bit murky.

Canal is still not fishable yet- no islands showing.

Lots of chums and chums and chums. We were using roe and I did not think that the chums would hit them.. Almost every few casts, the float would dive and a black striped fish would emerge. Had to break off a few because it would have cut into fishing time >:(

For the one thousand casts I made, I was able to connect with 2 bright cohos. One got off and one hatchery fish which I landed. Got them both really tight in close to shore.

Chum on!!!! with the rising sun behind him....

Did not see anything else caught other then CHUMS!!

Thanks for the report. :)

Was there by 6:30am at lickman and found that my new favourite spot already occupied by 6 fishermen (weekend....)!! It was still dark and chilly.. wonder how long have those guys been waiting there already.  tried retrieving blades on a float at the back water to no avail. guys there landed 3 wild cohos and 1 hatchery and a chrome silver jack.  Left for a spot near tamahi and found that a group of visitors were bbcing one of the best deep pools of the river.  Stayed there for an hour and saw big springs and chums being pulled in consistently.  Left the scene after i decided i had enough of the guy beside me fishing with long leader long float ... on a halibut rod, who tangled my line 3 or 4 out of 10 casts.  Went down river a bit to wilson rd and found that there were way too many cars parking out there so i didn't even bother going in.. decided to drive back to Vancouver at 2pm.
Water clarity was better than yesterday, the spot under highway 1 bridge was fine, about 3 guys fishing there, while only less than 5 were fishing below KWB (gong show no more).   Still no vedder coho for me after nearly 10 trips!

I would be there by 6am next time.

Went out with my flyfishing teacher Ehsan, we had a great day. We lost more than we landed, all coho and two jacks. We ended up with 3 hatchery coho in the 8-9lb range.

Pictures in my album.

Was out today as well.  Hooked 8 coho, landed 7,  kept 4 hatchery,  released 1 wild and 2 other hatchery coho.  Plus 1 big spring.  One of the hatchery coho released was about 12 lbs.  Nice big fish!  ;D

All caught on #5 silver Metric Spinner by Luhr Jensen.  If you haven't tried a blade do it!! You may be surprised by the results.  The coho just smash em!

Today's plan was to be on the water before sunrise and fish until the Help Habitat Fundraiser. That plan was dismissed at 1:30am after a long dinner outing. ::) Chris phoned at 6:30am and woke me up. "Are you there yet?", he asked. "What...? Where?" "There!" "Where...?" ::) :o Back to bed until 9:30am, caught enough coho this season anyway. ;D

The fundraiser today was... poorly attended IMO compared to the amount of people we see at our river cleanups. Oh well, these projects are set up to benefit anglers, so it's up to everyone if we wish to improve things. Once again, none of us won the grand prize... so off to the river I went.

The outing almost started out a very bad one. A bad outing doesn't mean no fish, it usually involves something bad happens. I decided to go for a wade at a usual spot knowing that the water was slightly higher, and that others have been wading across in the last two days. One step forward had water up to my waist and the current started picking my feet up. I desperately trying to grab bottom. It took about 10 seconds, which seemed like 10 minutes, before I was able to secure myself without going for a drink. I was still not out of it at this point. The wade back to the starting point against the current took fair amount of time. I was quite relieved once I got back on shore. Complete carelessness it was. :-X

With that excitement behind me, I chose to fish from the side of the river without crossing. Second cast with the big chunk of chum roe sent the float diving, but the sun glare delayed my strike so it was completely missed. Third cast, the float dove again but I was still not able to connect. On the fifth cast, I was able to hook up. It turned out to be a jack chinook.

The rest of the afternoon only saw several chum salmon landed, and one adult chinook around sundown. Water condition could not be better, Coho salmon were either not where I was or not so interested except at first light when Chris and Lew fished it.

Right On Fish Man!  :)
Same thing I've been saying for the past few weeks. If you haven't been nailing Coho everytime out then simply find the slack water that hasn't been spooked and chuck the blades. My choice is the Blue Fox Vibrax but they're all good and the bigger the better! My #6 gold is my first choice but hard to find in any stores now in that large size. Had bought a couple of dozen at $1.99 each when Walmart had a promo two seasons ago.
And good to hear you avoided the body surfing Rodney ;D My newbie fishing buddy last week decided to try and cross in the narrower part of the river to save time and got his first lesson in why you always look for the widest slacker water spot instead. I had already crossed down below and saw he was taking a chance and waded out towards him but couldn't quite reach him and just extended my fishing rod to him as he lost is balance. He grabbed the rod and was just able to right himself but managed to lean forward enough to get a good litre of water down his chest waders. Another few inches and he would have filled his waders and been headin down stream. Be careful out there everyone and best to put your rod in your back pack to free up your hands and use a good sturdy stick to brace yourself against the current while crossing any faster areas.
I'll be heading up most of this week and report back.
Cheers!

Great but maybe spare the usual fishing lecture and just give a report.

Great day for me. Got out to a spot I fished alone last saturday and saw around 10 people in the area just before first light, but only 1 other guy waiting to fish in the spot I wanted. By the time we started fishing another guy joined us. I managed to hook into around 6 or 7 coho and a few chum, landing 3 wild coho and 1 chum. After an hour or so, it went dead. Moved up to a different spot and managed another wild coho in an hour. Moved up to a third spot where I saw 2 guys leaving with a few spring jacks and fished it for 3 hours. It was pretty slow for the first hour and a half, except for a chum and a large spring which both broke off. The next half hour saw a short flurry of action, as I managed to land 1 hatchery coho, lost another as I tried to tail it and hooked into another coho or jack. I'm still amazed that none of the coho are coloured up at all.

Sounds like a great day!  I chose Squamish this morning and was skunked.  Not even a bite!
