There Are Back, Vedder, Oct.26
« on: October 26, 2007, 01:38:21 PM »

On the road a little late and as I drove  ??? returned the true "Master's" call from last night, he was at the river already wondering if he could wade the river in a certain spot. ;D ;D I said "about 6 inches above from before". "We are going then", he says. Gosh if he falls in it will be my fault.

When I arrive I check to see he and his partner are on the bar and have made the wade ok, .

I decide on the safe side of the river to fish and find Gwyn who I was to meet there anyway and the Doc settled in. Gwyn said the fish are close in and he has missed a couple. I just got a call an going out on a CO ride along so will keep it short now. Anyway I ended up with a 5 and 7 pounder, both hatchery. Lew who arrived got 3 wild before we went to Cookies with the gang. The Master had some fish also as he came to our side of the river. The reports I got some good fish were taken below us as well. Should be good fishing this weekend. Got to go.

Personally, I think the water was a bit too murky for my liking. At best, I think its only about a foot of visibility. Its still a bit high- no islands visible down the canal yet.Tried several spots down the lower river like Lickman, Bergman and Browne. Did not see much happening at all. Saw a few fishermen kept a few black chums.

Anyone have better luck??

Landed 3 coho (2 wild, 1 hatchery), 2 jacks, 2 chum.  All hooked inside the mouth and all fish were released except 1 coho hatchery and 1 jack.

Lost 2 more coho, 1 look to be a rather large spring (with red tint on the middle of the body straight across from head to tail), and 5 more hook up.

The water is very high.  But again find a hole where fish is hiding.

This weekend should be awesome...  Wish I can go again :(

I fished the upper river....started first light at the slab...maybe 6 guys on my side 3 on the other and very few fish hook.  One hatch coho to the guy with a 6 foot leader and another guy snagging springs on the far side....that was it.  I walked from there down to the ranger fishing a lot of nice water as well as a few spots even further down river and I didnt see any fish myself.  Even the flossers were pulling in fish that they were turning their noses up at, everything seemed really colored up.

Conditions today were good.  Hit the river from top to bottom!  Approx vicinity of BCR Bridge had the river with a light green colour with some silt in it...headed up to vicinity of Borden Creek...CLEAR was the word....same for Tamihi, Alison pools, the whole stretch behind Wilson Rd....  In other words, go to all the high traffic spots only as the rest of the river is BLOWN!   ;D  In all seriousness, I was pleasantly surprised how well the river has shaped back up.

That said, I was BLANKED today.  Roe, wool, roe and wool, blades...yielded the whole sum of zero fish and only 2 on, 1 of which was purely an accident.  Snaggers of course were in play, with the best example being a snapperhead several kms up from Borden Creek jigging...ended up tail hooking a Coho and happily bonked it!   >:(    I would characterize the amount of fish being caught as well below what I saw a few weeks ago.  In all the spots I fished or looked in on I'd say I saw maybe 8-10 fish caught and I was on the river from 7AM to about 4PM.

It was a tough day for gear for me.  Broke the tip off my rod, my reel decided to only spool on the right, I hit more than my share of snags today and lost more blades and hooks, hell, even more floats and weights (!) than I did all of last year!!   Oh well, it was a beautiful day out there!!

I was on the river from 2pm to sunset...

Midriver, 4 of us all working fly's, well actually I used my baitcastor more than the fly rod... Too darn cold, I didn't bring gloves... Water was coloured up, maybe 2ft vis, but didn't seem to matter. Anyways nothing but coloured up Chum, no silver to be seen. Each of us easily landed 7-8 fish, lost almost as many. Sorry guys no pics, but lots of video...

We all had a bunch of fun working the slack water off a longer rapids... On a 8weight fly rod a Chum is a blast to catch.

Running fast sink tips, with anything weighted and pink on the end... Xmas trees & very small split shot to get the line down with the fast water...

Roe was also performing really well... Chum and roe, maybe bigger pigs than Coho when it comes to roe.

With all the Chum in the pocket we fished no one expected nor did land anything else... Those fished cleared every other type of fish out of the section. Man did we have fun.

Cya on the water.

Ghostfish...  It sort of looks like the male in the picture with a darker back.  And it was like the size of large chum.  I did not think steelhead will be there so I did not think of that.

Thanks for pointing out.  I will pay more attendion next time :)

FWIW coho also get a nice red stripe along their side as they mature.
