Well. I think this will be the last time I fish for quite a while. My Wife is due with our first child in 4 weeks. She wanted to come and fish, but ....... as she said, "Too big and too tired".
So, off to North Van to pick up my fishing buddy (English Michael) and off we went. We were on the river by about 8:15 - 8:30, with no other bank anglers around. There was a jet boat with 3 other guys in the run, and seemed to be doing well. We fished upstream from them, and I was into a big Chum on my second cast. After a short time, the guys in the boat told us to come down to where they were, as there was a nice trough where the Chum were stacked. (I don't know who you are guys, but Thank You).
The rain started to come down heavy and hard. It was a cold rain that felt like little pins and needles hitting your bare hands. Within a couple of hours, I started to wish I had put on that pair of thermal socks, and not just my regular cotton tube socks, as my feet were a little chilly. Although, having said that, my Bare Blackwaters did keep me relatively warm.
So ... the fishing. Lot's of Chum. There were some very bright fresh fish in the system. All the Chum we caught put on a great fight. I lost 2 Coho before they came within 10 yards of me ... very fresh, full of life, and putting on a great acrobatic show. All in all, Michael and I had a great day. There are lots of fish where we were, but certainly not nearly the number of years gone by. We found that the "bite" came in waves. Once the "bite" was off, we changed the presentation, and then the "bite" picked up.
We left about 1:00 pm, to get a hot coffee, and a long drive home.
If I have chance next weekend (ie: a green light from my Wife), I will hit the other areas (way upstream) and target the Coho using my new spoon rod and a collection of deadly metal.
Cheers, John
