.17 suggestions?
« on: February 20, 2008, 11:40:12 AM »

My brother is looking at guns for "sniping" grouse (because we hate plucking pellets out), and a buddy of his recommended a .17 Marlin rifle.  Any suggestions from the sharpshooters here?

I have a .17 HMR like this one http://www.savagearms.com/93r17glv.htm

awesome and accurate rifle, i shoot groups under 1" at 100yds on my bipod w/ a scope so it should do well for sniping grousies ;D

have a look at what savage offers and im sure you can find a .17 that suits you

the ammo prices are a bitch tho :-\

Ended up going with a savage stainless HMR with a black composite stock and a scope (i forget the brand) thats about 1/2 the length of the rifle hahah.  Sighted it in at about 150 yards.  Nice straight shooter!

marmot with being sighted in at 150 yard, (2.7-2.9 inches high at 100 yards to be dead on at 150yards) hows it hitting at 50 yards and even 200yards.

I just bought one too, never fired it yet and was wondering this...

thanks

its a tack driver.  Didn't shoot it out to 200.  We set up some targets at about 50 yards and were putting it within an inch.  You'll be surprised how loud they are.  We were hoping it would be quieter but it is 2x as loud as a .22!  Lots of fun though.  I'd get a bipod.  What rifle did you go with?

We also picked up a ruger10/22.  It has had a few loading issues with rounds jamming in the mag.  Fun plinker.  can't beat the price of ammo either.  Should be a good little grouse gun with a 4 power scope on it.
