Spent a couple few hours on the lake (1st time) landed 1 bow maybe 14" with a lake troll and worm.
Fish were rising all around for a bug I don't know (I'm not a flyer)
Flys like a mosquito, about 1cm long, black with thin light colored wings and had fuzzy black antenna?
I had hitch hikers all day on the pontoon!

No crappies ?

Those rises could have been mostly crappies but the water temp might be a bit cold for em yet.

Were the rises near the ring of weeds or more out in the deeper parts of the lake ?

It's still a bit too early for crappies.

Lower Mainland Lakes such as Whonnock will start being stocked by the Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery this week (well, most of the stocking will happen the end of this month, but stocking will start on a few lakes this week. Updates soon).

Chironomids were the hatching insects you saw.

I was hoping for crappie
I,m sure the risers were trout and in every part of the lake!
I'll go back in May for the crap!

I was at Whonnock on Sat Feb 23, that was a week ago. Water temp was 46 F, Chironomid were hatching and the Crappies were biting on Bloodworms. I was going to go again last sat but I figured without the sun to warm the surface temp the bite would be a little slow for my liking. Another two weeks (if these warm temps hold and the fishing should be good.

Hey Newsman, any tips on how to get me some of them Crappie, float, bottom, dock, boat, deep etc.
I would catch them all the time growing up in Ont. and was hoping to see 1 after 20 years (nostalgia/hot oil)

Early season like now they seem to like Bloodworm (sizes 14 to 24) and if there is a good hatch of chironomids a Griffith Gnat (again sizes 14 to 24) works well.

When things warm up like next month through the end of June, try minnow patterns in sizes 12 to 16.

August is the best month I have found and fishing Black Gnat or Royal Coachman dries in sizes 12 to 16, in the evening can provide fish every cast. I tell all my students that if they want to master dry fly this is a good place to start.

In the fall I have good success with a wet line and Baggy Shrimp in sizes 12 & 14.

I also suggest that you try Hatzic Lake once things warm up, the Crappies there are bigger and more aggressive. You also have a shot at some nice Bass in Hatzic as well.
