Should I??

Hi everyone,

I am arriving to Vancouver on the 21st and leaving the 29th and I am wondering if I should bring my fly rod?  The primary reason for the trip is to get away with the G/F, but she has graciously indicated that she wouldn't mind if I took a day to go fishing!!!  I was just wondering if it is worth it for me to bring my gear all the way....I would love to fish but just don't know where to go!!

If you bring your waders and boots, then I'd say definitely YES.
Some salmon on the fly opportunities should be pretty good by then.

You want to bring an 8-weight, nothing lighter.

Vedder, Harrison, Nicomen slough, Chehalis, Squamish, Cheakamus will have fishable numbers of springs and/or coho and/or chum salmon by then.

If you are flying in it may not be worth the risk of bringing all your gear with you. You can rent everything you need from Pacific Angler on West Broadway, plus they can send you in the right direction and help you with flies and such. They are an advertiser on this site so it's worth supporting them.

This would be the closest shop for you if you are in Vancouver, especially if you focus is on flyfishing.

It's a bit early for Nicomen Slough during the period of your stay. Harrison River has limited foot access. Chilliwack River can be productive but may get crowded, so it may not suit your style if solitude is needed. Pay attention to the Chilliwack River water clarity as well, especially now that there is a new clayslide, which has degraded water clarity. Squamish and Cheakamus Rivers maybe worth checking out. The scenery is very nice, you may encounter a bull trout and some early chum and coho salmon. If smaller species on the fly are what you are after, then a longer drive from Vancouver can lead you to some productive trout streams. Detailed information of all of these locations can be fetched from the store when you visit it.

Thanks everyone for the info, I really appreciate it.  I already have planned on stopping into the shop there as I have talked to Jason via phone briefly, he has already been an immense help. I think that I am going to bring my waders and boots....I have a winston BIIx 11' 7wt that I was thinking of packing away, what do you think?? too light?? 

I have fished the Squamish a few years ago, beautiful country, came up empty handed though, an experience none the less.  I have also fished the Vedder for a day and it too was quite nice but again, empty handed.

Given the type of rod that I will have, what is the best technique to employ, swinging or nymphing??
