sturgeon stamp?? or tag??
« on: March 27, 2008, 08:17:30 PM »

What do people think of a sturgeon limited entry system.  Say 5-10 bucks to apply for a draw for designated areas along the fraser river.  i am not sure how to divy up the areas, that would be up to the managers....but say something like this for example (if the sturgy population#'s allowed so) say allow 5 tags for mission to hope and/or also put in some guide tags as well??....and have a size restriction of say 3-6 feet for the retention.

I only ask this, because i think it could put some valuable money back into the conservation and or hatchery programs for this species.  So for a few sturgeon retained....it could mean a pile of money...put back into the sturgeon...if the government did it right.

also, is the possibilty of the $60 stamp true?

I welcome any feedback, thanks in advance.

A Lower Fraser River white sturgeon conservation surcharge stamp for all anglers who wish to participate in the catch and release fishery is currently being considered by the province.

Don't like the limited draw idea at all.
If I have to get a tag,so be it.Although not pleased.
Opening that can of worms would no doubt be applied to all rivers and lakes and to other species over time.
As an avid Sturgeon fisherman, keep it catch and release,no retention.

Keep it catch and release.
If someone can show me how my Sturgeon tag money actually helps the Sturgeon then i wouldnt mind it at all.
Allthough i think $60.00 is far too much.
Im all for doing research and collecting data but over the last 15 years or so there has been a lot of tagging and research done on these fish.
Its not like they can do much for the fish anyways as they roam and also the spawning habitat is much different than the Salmonids.
Just keep it closed to retention and the rest is up to nature.
