Jon boat in ocean?
« on: April 16, 2008, 12:55:23 PM »

I'm planning a fishing trip to the BC Gulf Islands. I want to do some in shore crabbing and fishing. I'm not planning on venturing way out. I have a 15.5 ' Lowe with a flat bottom but a semi v front. It has a 50/35 jet ob. Obviously not the best for large chop ride wise. I have run this boat only in the Fraser and haven't seen any serious chop. I have run through some larger rollers on the incoming tide that were ok if backed off the throttle. Obviously the Fraser is not the ocean and it can whip up pretty fast. Is it safe to run this boat in the ocean closer to shore or am I asking for trouble?

As long as there are no nasty Ferry wakes you should be OK, there are some tidal rips in some places but I've canoed around/through them with little problem.

edit-some of the scows locals roar around in you wouldn't believe! ::) ;D

Thanks Sam, I might take a cruise on Harrison Lake in the wind and get a feel for it.
