The River Why

15 years after "A River Runs Through It", Hollywood is doing it again, with "The River Why". It's in production now. It will be interesting to see what this movie does for fly fishing after it hits the theaters.

"A river runs through it" was one of my favorites. Any dates been set for release of this new one.

The river why is a great book. Everyone should read it. Will definitely see the movie but must read the book again before.

Hopefully the fishing in it will be a tad more realistic than "A River Runs Through It".  My buddies and I took it in when it hit the theaters and had a good chuckle on the way Brad P. set up on those fish he caught.  He would have had to been using 20 lb. test in order not to break them off or break their backbone in the process.  I noticed that they didn't have a disclaimer saying that no fish were harmed during the making of this movie.  LOL

Not too many guys I know would have swam down river chasing a fish like that but it did add a little excitement to the movie.  Also, the spawner that Tom Skerret bonked was quite the beauty!

Over the last year I have received the goods on the Hollywood tricks used in that movie.

The fish were tied to the line and staged for those film shots.

Only Tom Skerret knew how to handle a fly rod before the shoot.

Garry Borger taught and coached the anglers through each shoot.

Garry Borger did the shadow casting and when asked what application that cast was good for? His answer was only Hollywood movie shoots.

The Blackfoot River has suffered toxic out flow from mining sites since the thirties.

Much of the story is true, but enough of it was both embellished and understated to make one ask what was true and what was not.

All in all I think one should take the show for what was intended; A heart warming story about a family who loved fly fishing.

the details on production of the fishing scenes in "A river Runs..." was published in Fly Fisherman and other places at the time the movie was released. Some of the casting scenes features Jason Borger and not the actors like Brad Pitt. Dan Bailey was also involved.

My mistake it was Jason. Details are also available on his site. I do remember the story in fly fisherman but I don't remember it being that detailed.

Re the movie, my son works at the flyshop used in the production of the movie. I got to sit in on a brief portion of filming and found it very fascinating. I remarked about it at my blog site (not promoting here, really):

a few days after this post my son came down with an almost life altering infection in his leg while swimming in the Columbia R. and hanging at a farm belonging to one of the production team members:
